Manga for 10yr olds?

“Great Question” (3points)

I’ve got a 10yr old niece and 8 yr old nephew right behind her. She’s getting big into graphic novels like DogMan and the cat equivelent of DogMan. She likes Anime.

I was thinking it would be cool to get her the first volumes of a few different graphic novels and manga to let her try some different things.

Any age appropriate suggestions? Note – by age appropriate, I don’t mean everything has to be hard Disney level G-rated. This kid has seen alot of movies and TV that isn’t super age appropriate. But I don’t want to give her something too adult.

Most anime have a few questionable scenes or subject matter but the link below should give you a good place to start.

Although, it’s illustrated by an American author, I think “Miki Falls” by Mark Crilley is a good introduction to the style of manga.

Zita the Space Girl

Softies
Bone
The bad guys

Ask your local children’s librarian for more. This is a huge genre right now.

I ran the question by my son and he suggests Mighty Jack as well.

As a personal addendum, if you can track down singles or collections of Carl Barks comics, in particular the longer Uncle Scrooge adventures, they’re basically hilarious proto-manga, which many of the original manga artists were inspired by.
