Could I survive without my established relationships? Yes. I’m confident that I could. I think the biggest problem is that you would have a huge disconect in terms of culture and technology the further forward or back you went. Like, go forward, and people might consider you to be Hitler because you ate plants…from the wild! Gasp! You BARBARIAN! I cite that just because I was trying to think of something no one would consider offensive today, but changing mores might regard as horrific in the future because technology changed and they could manufacture food proteins in a lab without murdering plants.

Or go backward and find yourself needing to know how to churn your own butter. Can you make butter? I know I can’t. I know there’s a churning step, and there’s dairy and fats in there somehow….but to me, butter is just a thing that magically appears on my store shelves. And when you encounter the casual racism, or realize that the local lord can do whatever the F—- he pleases to you with no accountability….yeah. It’ll be hard to adapt.

It could be really problematic if you stayed in the past. No matter how far away in the past, you could influence the outcome of the future and changed it for the better or worse. And there would be no way around it because you just have to do something if you ever exist. What if you changed the future for the worse? What if the changed future involved you or your loved ones not existing? What if the changed future involved some nasty society change that wouldn’t benefit anyone?

Traveling to the future may be less troublesome since it wouldn’t involve your life directly. But the future is also the past of another future. What if you changed that that future for the worse?
