Can you recommend a 3D modeling program?

I used to use 3ds max, but I don't want to have to download the trial for this small project.

I'm trying to build a model of a couch/bunkbed that I'm planning on building. It's all made of 2x4s or plywood. Are there any 3d modeling programs that I can specify dimensions easily and "build" this thing in 3d, without having all the complex functions of 3dsmax? I just want to be able to make rectangular solids of the right dimensions, and rotate/move them.

Any suggestions?

Google has a free version of Sketchup. It should be able to do what you need.

If you want a real 3d modelling program, use Autodesk Maya http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id;=7635018

But for a free easy-to-use 3d modelling tool, Google Sketchup is the way to go

Well I've tinkered with sketchup and I hate it. I can't get used to the perspective things they have. It was hard for me to accurately define shapes and rotate them. (I think sketchup might be good for a user with no previous experience, but not someone with a background in 3ds max)

Ultimately I was just trying to avoid having to install such a large file, just for this one project.

[On a side note, when did autodesk buy alias? That is interesting.]

The old Truespace 3.2 version is easy enough to get a hang of in a day
and its free.

if you have some time to burn though
I'd recommend Blender3d....
It takes a bit to get the interface....but its really nice when you do (its free too)
