My car tells me the speed limit and it doesn’t have auto-pilot. The speed limit is incorrect more often then you might guess, but it’s mostly correct.

Just like they “see” Red lights and pedestrians.

No, they don’t “read” signs. The mapping databases are updated, but if a city puts up a temporary sign they might not know about it. But any change in driver or pedestrian behavior is picked up by the sensors. Same with any temporary barricade.

I don’t know if it’s in any of the self-driving cars yet, but Honda has a traffic sign recognition system in its suite of driver-assist features. Right now, it only reads speed limit signs and informs the driver of speed limit changes. But I imagine it wouldn’t be too hard to expand it to other standardized signs (like stop signs).

They don’t really need to but they certainly could if required or mandated.

Some cars read signs. (e.g. Nissan Ariya with Pro Pilot option.)

Yes. They also read books to their scooter kids at night.
