I give to the Disasters Emergency Committee which operates in the UK.

In these times of crisis, people in life-and-death situations need our help and our mission is to save, protect and rebuild lives through effective humanitarian response.

When I can afford it I give to an animal charity.

I give to St. Jude’s children’s hospital and to the two local animal shelters.

I like World Central Kitchen too, so I often donate to them! I give to my church every week as a tithe, and sometimes I make an extra offering to one of our missionaries.

Other than that, there’s a lovely animal rescue place in Ohio called, Our Hands Extended Sanctuary. This woman, along with a few employees and a whole lot of volunteers, does incredible work with cats and dogs that have been abandoned or brought in a strays. Many of them are horribly injured and it looks like they might not pull through but often with the help of that’s who donate their time, they are able to save their lives. And even for the sad few that they can’t save, they are given lots of love and food and shelter until it’s time to euthanize them. They’re on Facebook if anybody is interested. Some of the stories will just break your heart but it’s always so wonderful when they are able to save an animal that comes in horribly injured.

We donate to about a dozen charities and foundations, but Red Cross is the main one.
Others include Sacramento Jazz Education Foundation, Loaves and fishes, Yellowstone Foundation, and Yosemite Foundation.

Ziggy’s Refuge Farm Sanctuary

They not only rescue disabled farm animals, and give them a home on their farm, they help other animal rescue organizations in their vicinity. During Hurricane Helene, the owners and volunteers at Ziggy’s helped move animals and people off of flooded farms, and they donated food, medicine, generators and other supplies to other organizations that would have lost a lot of animals without their help. They are in the process of building a state of the art veterinary hospital on their farm so as not to have to transport sick and injured animals to other vet hospitals that are hours away. The other rescue organizations and farms in their area (North Carolina) will be able to use their facility too when it is completed. It will be named the River Center for Compassionate Care, for one of their pigs, named River, that didn’t survive during the hurricane when two other vet hospitals, that they drove to many hours away from their farm, refused to administer life saving treatment to a farm animal.

I found them on Facebook in the reels and then started following them. They have tremendous compassion for the animals in their care. The organization was named for Ziggy, the first pig that they saved, before embarking on a life dedicated to saving farm animals. Ziggy the pig now lives happily and safely on their farm along with a lot of other pigs, goats, horses, llamas, and 2 pug dogs <3

I support a local immigrants’ support organization, an Arizona immigrants’ legal aid group, the International Rescue Org, Doctors without Borders, Everytown for Gun Safety, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the National League of Abortion Funds plus media orgs like PBS and WNYC. I try to focus on groups that directly help people rather than just lobby for change politically. I’m adding the Trevor Project and It Gets Better this year too.

The budget is tight this year, but I always make an effort to donate blood to the Red Cross. I’m O- so it’s important. Just a friendly reminder to others on a budget that your gift doesn’t have to be financial, and that blood is a great way to save someone’s life.

There’s a toys for tots that I’m going to contribute to as well this year as well as my former High School’s Alumni fund. In years past I’ve given to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and some charities focused on the homeless.

And that’s a good reminder that it’s not only money that is valuable to give. Time, blood, gently used clothes, toys, etc are also very welcome.

Once I’m financially solvent again, I’ll resume occasionally donating to So Pov LC, Center for Bio Diversity, and the Human Rights Campaign.

Civil liberties, free speech, and similar organizations.

And libraries and their Friends’ groups.

Nothing religious or political.

I usually give something to Wikipedia, NPR, and the Guardian, not necessarily at the holidays. I recently gave to Second Harvest Food Bank and another local food pantry. There’ll be a few more before the holidays are over, usually the library and others that have some lasting value.

ACLU, SPLC, ILRC, Red Cross, Planned Parenthood, NPR, UCSF STAR Center, UC Davis MIND Institute, Disability Rights Education Defense Fund, Center for Disability Justice Research at CSEB…local programs for homeless, women’s shelter, friends of the library, donors choose for Title 1 schools and special ed classrooms, after school youth theatre program.

We are lucky to be in a place to give back to our community.

Sounds like we may be in the minority here. But we also donate money for political organizations and individual candidates. Both on a national and hyperlocal level.

Trans Youth Equality Fund. They fund basic supplies for homeless youth or youth in crises. They help families move to safe states and help with travel expenses for medical appointments.

“The need for urgent funds for trans youth in crisis or those fleeing anti trans states is increasing every day. This is a crisis like we have not seen. Since the election families have called all day and evening.We do have a vetting system for helping families and we can have more impact if our allies can give generously to our Emergency Fund. Every dollar will help and add up.“
