I'm having some trouble with torrents.

“Great Question” (0points)

I use uTorrent, and I’m downloading off of btjunkie. I’m only downloading torrents that have lots of seeds, positive comments, and that I know I can trust. But when I do download them, under “seeds’ it says 0 then a large number in brackets. [i.e. 0(5425) or sometimes 0(0)] And it never downloads. After I wait a while, it says (in the Tracker Status) Tracker Offline (Timed Out). All the other comments underneath the torrents that I download say “This is great! It downloaded fast too!” Why won’t it work for me? The farthest one of my torrents has downloaded was 20%, then became inactive. (and yes I did try force start)

Your ISP may be throttling BT traffic or blocking the ports BT uses.

If that’s the case, how would I fix that? Or even if it isn’t the case, how do I check if that’s true or not?

Try grabbing something from http://eztv.it/frontpage.php and see if that works. If none of those work something else is going on.

Is a port forwarded from your router? This can slow your torrenting down to a crawl.

I just tried to download an episode of “The Big Bang Theory” from that site JP. It’s already saying “Tracker Offline (Timed Out)” and it’s 0(0) under seeds and 0(0) under peers, no clue what that means though. Sorry, I’m new at uTorrent :P

@blastfamy, I’m not too tech savvy, so I’m not 100% sure on what you mean by “fowarded from” but my router is also connected (through wifi) to my sisters laptop. (It’s wired to my Xbox too, but I don’t think that should make a difference when my xbox isn’t running)

Is your firewall blocking incoming/outgoing connections?

MrMontpetit's avatar

Eambos, how do I check that?

If your isp is blocking bt, you can try enabling encryption (RC4), which may work. Not sure how it works in uTorrent, though. I use Azureus (the good version before they put that vuze crap on it.)

MrMontpetit's avatar

So do you think I should try to download Azureus?

tWrex's avatar

Nah. If you like uTorrent stick with that. I’ll try to help you out more in the morning. Long day. Need sleepy.

Nm… still need sleepy, but here’s an article to get you going with encryption and a list of isp’s that suck at life

MrMontpetit's avatar

Thanks, I’ll check it out.

MrMontpetit's avatar

I did what the article said, I’ll see if it makes any difference, thanks.

tWrex's avatar

NP. Hope it helps. If not, we’ll have to go back to the firewall/router like @Eambos suggested

MrMontpetit's avatar

So far all my downloads are still at 0.0KB/s.

tWrex's avatar

Drats…. Alright. Is this your first time downloading torrents? Or have you been able to do this for a while, but now you can’t? I may not respond for a while. I get to go deal with the VA today. Wheeeee

MrMontpetit's avatar

My sister used it before, but I don’t think she used uTorrents. It was on the same computer, and it worked. Now it won’t work for me.

tWrex's avatar

Uh oh. The puter hates you! Just joking. Well, you’re behind a router and a firewall correct? What type of router do you have (linksys, netgear, d-link, etc)? And what did your sister use instead?

MrMontpetit's avatar

It’s a d-link router. And I’m not 100% sure on what my sister used, but I think it was Azureus.

tWrex's avatar

Ok, do you know how to login to the router and forward a port? And what port are you using to download your torrents?

MrMontpetit's avatar

No clue what any of that means :) I’m very technologically challenged.
