Yes, it depends on if you’re a guy or a girl, but I’m pretty sure a longer index finger on a woman and a longer ring finger on a man means you might be gay. They think it’s linked to a “gay gene” that might exist, or maybe not…it’s pretty sketchy.

But I have a longer index finger and I’m not a lesbian, and Tiny has a longer ring finger (if I remember correctly from a different question, can’t think of the original topic), and she is.

I have a longer ring finger and I couldn’t be straighter.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that….

so if your gay and your middle finger is longer,
– does that mean you’re faking it?

joeysefika's avatar

@A_Beaverhausen, no its simply means your’re influenced by something else such as surroundings, upbringing, etc. I suppose if there is a gene you just have differences in what gender you prefer.

.:edit:. sorry, sarcasm is hard over the internet

Joey, I think that was a joke. Everyone’s middle finger is longest…

I was told this one a long time ago. When I was younger I thought there was something to it until I realized you can easily change the length differences between your fingers by slightly shifting them in different directions.

The only thing I’ve heard about the differences in length when it comes to fingers all has to do with testosterone. A lot of guys tend to have fingers that look very similar in length (flat across), which has a tendency to reveal higher testosterone levels in those individuals. The more fingers arch (in a natural, relaxed hand) the less testosterone a person has. The same holds true for women.

Now… Whether testosterone levels may play a part in being gay or straight… Who can say? But it’s easy to see where the theory might come from, I suppose.

Ah I saw this in a documentary on national geographics I believe it’s for guys and if the ring is longer than the index it supposedly means he is more prone to cheat

I thought it was the other way around… less ring finger = easier to slip the ring off

I’m kidding

There have been studies regarding the length of index fingers in comparison to your ring finger and some variations of that, since hormones in the womb were thought to contribute to homosexuality and there has been a link between hormones and finger length, the studies basically sought out to compare finger length and homosexuality. They did find some trends, not always true, but sometimes. You can read about it here and here and HERE

Some found more complicated explanations… you might want to google finger length + homosexuality.

All those links really concentrate on one study though. I could’ve sworn there were others. I’ll keep looking.

I have big feet.

Haven’t heard that but I have heard that if you have a hair between the top two knuckles on the ring finger of your right hand then you carry a gene for alzheimers.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

Queer, you can shift the appearance of their lengths, but you cant change which finger is actually longer.

When scientists study the phenomenon, they don’t just “eyeball” it. They use a ruler and measure the person’s fingers starting from the “crease” closest to the hand (when there’s more than one).

I have hair all over my hand, guess I’m screwed.

@PupnTaco: I hope you aren’t THE hairy hand!
see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawkins_v._McGee (relevant part: The graft caused the palm of Hawkins’ hand to grow thick hair.)

Not that much.
