No footnotes, but I remember reading over and over that W was determined
to prove to his father that he didn’t need any help. Nevertheless he stuffed his
cabinet full of older men who’d served under his father.
@mea05key: George HW was not really as incapable as W, plus he didn’t choose
Carl Rove and Dick Cheney to tell him what to do.
If there is any truth to the movie “W”, they often don’t see eye to eye. I have always thought a big motivator for Jr. to get in to this war was to “show Daddy how to do it right”. In the movie Jr. was critical that his father had not done the job right the first time. I have thought many times during the last eight years that George Sr. didn’t look so bad after all.
“There’s no question about it. Wall Street got drunk—that’s one of the reasons I asked you to turn off the TV cameras—it got drunk and now it’s got a hangover. The question is how long will it sober up and not try to do all these fancy financial instruments.”
George W. Bush, speaking at a private fundraiser, Houston, Texas, July 18, 2008 (Watch video clip)
Echoing susanc’s comment, the W. presidency was chock-full of mainstays from the Reagan and H.W. Bush administrations. Cheney was H.W.‘s Secretary of Defense.
tyball——good point——this is why it is so important to hold the Bushies accountable—so we don’t get the same cast of characters fucking us again in 8 years.
