If you're signing a letter for your boss, normally you would sign your own name in the name-signing space above your boss's name, and write "p.p." before your boss's name. (Some people put the p.p. before the signer's name, instead.)

I have always been taught that you sign the boss' name and then put a slash and your initials, as you stated.
