Best methods of finding a rental apartment in Montreal?

I will be moving to Montreal this coming summer from Toronto, Ontario. Right now I am just casually browsing apartments on montreal.craigslist.org but I was wondering if there are any other recommended methods of finding places?

Craigslists seems to list a good portion of cheap, but decent apartments (is this the norm in Montreal?)

Do you have an idea of what area you want to live in? That might be a good way to start. A lot of the older neighborhoods are really nice, and very convenient.

GO HABS GO!! are you converting for real? welcome to montreal. if you’re coming for school, usually the school will have an off-campus housing program. you can also meet people who might know people. for instance, if you are jewish, you can join hillel, and meet many people who are in need of a roommate or who can hook you up. you can go to the “Y“s which are located all over the city. they often have posters up. they’re basically community centers where people can meet, but mainly used for exercise.

@Alfreda: I will be living in the downtown/core area for sure

@Zack: Heh, thanks for the excited reply :) I am actually moving with my girlfriend, who is going to Concordia there so we’re looking for a decent 1 bedroom near the university, I have yet to look for a job (too early) but I plan to find one atleast in the same area.

Thanks for the tip on the clubs, will definitely check it out.
