So I want a new phone for Christmas and I am trying to decide which phone to ask for, an Iphone or the LG Dare? I’m pretty sure o can access Fluther from both so we’re good in that area. What features does the Iphone have that the LG doesn’t and visa-versa.

The iPhone, absolutely. Easier to use, does whatever iPods do, has google maps, much better Internet, and much more

I have verizon, so if I switch to AT&T do I get to keep the same number?

I’ve had an iPhone for a while now and I absolutely love it! I can’t imagine owning another phone. So I would definitely suggest getting an iPhone.

One major advantage that the iPhone has over other phones is the iTunes App Store where you can get a whole slew of useful (and not so useful) applications to extend the functionality of your phone. Also, the web browsing experience can’t be beat—it is a true web browser so your experience will be exactly the same as if you were browsing a site on your computer (the exception to this would be that the iPhone doesn’t do Flash).

The downsides to the iPhone are that it doesn’t (yet) do MMS, which I find to be really annoying, but I think this is something they will address in future software updates (which are free). The other downside is that the camera on the iPhone is not great, but it doesn’t stop me from using it all the time—I just wish it was better.

It is possible to switch your number from Verizon to AT&T. You can check to see if your number is eligible for transfer on their website.

I believe you can keep the same number. Just don’t cancel Verizon first. Get At&t then tell them your old number and your Verizon plan should be canceled automatically.

@derek: thank you and welcome to fluther!

derekpcollins's avatar

@Comedian: Thanks! I just updated my answer with some downsides to the iPhone and I just thought of another positive: Apple addresses any issues with the phone and adds new features via free software updates. So if the phone is lacking something (software-wise) chances are Apple will addresses/add it in the future.

To add to your research check out PleaseFixTheiPhone for a list of people’s main complaints about the iPhone.

Also, if someone is getting this for you as a gift, I would mention the iPhone Gift Card to them :)

Good luck!

What is MMS?

derekpcollins's avatar

@Comedian: MMS = Multimedia Messaging Service. If, for example, my wife takes a photo with her phone and sends it to me, I can’t simply view it—I have to go to a website to view the message. Again, I’m sure this is something that Apple will address eventually—its one of the biggest complaints about the iPhone right now.

iPhone, duh!! Keep the same number, buy an iTunes card and get yourself hooked up with some cool apps! This is a no brainer.

I can send photos though right?

gimmedat's avatar

Yes, not through text but through email. You can do it, but it’s long and involved.

derekpcollins's avatar

@Comedian: Well, not through MMS. You can, however, send them via email, which is what I do. If you email it to a friend’s phone number (e.g. 1234567890@vtext.com for a Verizon customer) then they will receive it as a text.

Comedian's avatar

I have to use my email or send it to their email? And I can still send regualr texts right?

derekpcollins's avatar

@Comedian: Yes, you can send regular texts, just not texts that contain multimedia like images or video.

Also, just to clarify, you can email a photo to their wireless number and they will receive it on their phone as if it was a regular text message.

Comedian's avatar

Can you do that on the dare?

derekpcollins's avatar

@Comedian: I don’t have any experience with the Dare, but looking at their website it does look like it is MMS enabled, so I would say yes.

Even despite this limitation, I still love the iPhone and I think the other benefits far outweigh this shortcoming. Again, I think this is something that Apple will address in a future software update.

Comedian's avatar

Ok. I’ll ask for it for Christmas. How much are they?

derekpcollins's avatar

@Comedian: Good choice! You won’t be disappointed.

There are a few versions of the iPhone: an 8GB black model for $199 and a 16GB black or white model for $299. These are subsidized prices, but being new to AT&T you’ll be eligible for the subsidized price. You can find more information here.

Comedian's avatar

I’m in canada and my sister and parents won’t let me use their laptops (that’s the next item on my Christmas list) so could I get a direct link to the 16GB black iphone please?

derekpcollins's avatar

@Comedian: iPhone 3G. There isn’t a direct link to the 16GB model. You have to purchase and activate the phone at an Apple store or authorized retailer. That’s why I suggested the iPhone Gift Card if someone is giving you this as a gift.

Do you live in the U.S. or Canada?

brianinmn's avatar

Go to macrumors.com there an article “mms may soon be coming to iphone”. The app has been made just not approved by apple or the carrier yet. Downside is that att may jave a monthly charge to use it. Oh well, id pay it.

derekpcollins's avatar

Here’s the article regarding MMS coming to the iPhone that @brianinmn referred to above. It looks like this is only happening in Sweden and it is via a third party application. I’d love to see a native solution from Apple, but I’d certainly take a third party app over nothing if this was made available in the U.S.

Also, here is a great guide to sending MMS messages via email on the iPhone.

U.S.

derekpcollins's avatar

@Comedian: Ah, okay, I figured you must if you were switching to AT&T, but I got confused when you said you were in Canada.

Comedian's avatar

Oh yeah. I’m here for Thanksgiving. They’re being good sports since they’ve already had theirs.

Theres a few reviews worth reading..

Alright everyone, I got the LG Dare. My mum and dad bought it for me for Christmas. They wouldn’t let me switch to the iPhone I think because I would have to switch services and I’m already under my mum’s account (or something like that(not sure how it all works)) so it would be too much of a hassle. But I’m happy with this one!
