Of Popes and Hubris.
There are many stories in the bible regarding humans believing that they can emulate God, and all of those people are destroyed in some way in the Bible. Or they learn fun new languages. In an earlier discussion about Harry Potter and D&D, I hypothesized that magic was “off limits” for hardcore Christians because it represented a challenge to God, and so was unacceptable.
However, there seems to be one glaring exception to the one-God rule. The Catholic doctrine of Papal Infallibility, which is not mentioned even slightly in the Bible. It states that anything the Pope says instantly becomes the word of God. This seems rife with hubris, and indeed, represents an attempt by man to emulate God. Has this discrepancy ever been addressed in the church?
