Sniff it, but a lot depends on your fridge and how you keep it. Did you leave it without a cap? Is your fridge colder than most? Mine usually is very cold, on the lowest setting. Typically our milk lasts an extra day or two.
In NYC, there’s two expiration dates on milk and related products: one for outside the city and one for the city itself. The one outside is two days later than NYC’s.
@Grisson – It can be very stressful for a container of milk to sit at the bodega with the 30 year old cooler for 4 days. No one’s going to race in to buy it at $5 a gallon!
The date on the container is the Sell By date…not the spoil date. It should be good for at least a week after the sell by date.
Be sure you are storing it propertly, thought. Suggested—between 34° F and 38° F.
