What is a good online chat service that is not old, lame, petty, or about hookups?

I work a night shift and also up at night so get bored. All of the chat services seem either older (IRC), lame, or all hookups. I have tried Stickam and other places. Is there anywhere to just have a conversation about current events, the weather, life? I think sometimes all the chatters have been taken by online gaming or hookup sites depending on their interests.

Sniff, sniff. Fluther isn’t doing it for you?

I thought everything (live) on the Internet always regressed to being about gaming or hooking up (or both), if it didn’t start out that way to begin with. Think of who populates the ‘Net – nerds into technology (who like to game), and people looking for sex. Live chat (especially) is the most efficient way to do either.

The IRC is full of those.

@laureth So which are you?

There’s the Tucker Max message board and IFHY.

Also, you could consider using ones that cater to your interests. For instance, I am on one about my pets and one about the show Lost.

Wow, I haven’t heard “Tucker Max” in years.

@NaturalMineralWater: I’m more on the nerd side, but I don’t like gaming. And I found my spouse on the ‘net, so that’s like a permanent hookup, right?
