Actually I think Burma became Myanmar. See here for the Wikipedia account.

I was just going to say that I think you have your question backwards. Jeruba is just too fast for me.

In very short the military regime in that eventually took power changed the name in 1989 for a variety of reasons, i.e. as a symbol of their power.

Perhaps they thought it was time to throw off the colonial name (Burma) and go to a name with some historical resonance.

Most of the western world does not recognized the legitamacy of the Myanmar government and still officially refers to the nation as Burma.

it’s because Burma is one of the race. There are over 100 races in Myanmar.
