Anyone else notice anything like this?
I have 13k song sto choose from, and of that, i’ll just look at the first two letters of the alphabet. I have every AC/DC CD, that’s somewhere between 150 and 200 songs. I have every Antrhax CD, that’s probably between 100 and 150 songs. I have every Beatles CD including the multi-disc sets that came out in the 90s…that’s a good 200 to 250 songs at least. I’ve got every Beatie Boys CD…another close to 100 tracks. I have every Ozzy ero Black Sabbath album (all 8 studio albums, two official and one bootleg 2 disc live set)...another 100+ songs. These are like I said, just the As and Bs where I have over 100 songs per artist. Now, a random 50 songs out of 13,000, any of these artists should have more than a 50/50 chance of having shown up at least once. But yet none of them did. That in and of itself is weird to me.
But then look at what DID show up. Some of it I’m not surprised. I’ve got a ton of Tori Amos, and she showed up twice. Bad Religion, I have all their CDs, now they showed up twice in a ROW, which is really weird. No surprise a White Stripes song showed up…I have all their albums and probably a dozen or so live bootleg shows, many of which are multi disc sets. Dave Matthews showed up a couple tims, to be expected with as many of his CDs as I have. Nirvana, same thing as the White Stripes…all their studio albums and a ton of bootlegs. BUT, here’s what’s weird.
I have 8 songs out of 50 which come from artists fro whom I have only ONE album, and 9 songs from artists for whom I have only two albums. That means over 1/3 of what showed up at random (17/50 or 34%) comes from let’s say less than 300 songs out of 13,000 or about 3 to 4% of my collection. Even weirder, I have one song that came from a collection where that is the only song I have by that artist.
I guess what I’m trying to say is of the 50 random songs, 1/3 come from about 3% of my collection, whereas a full 10% of my collection isn’t even represented. I guess that’s why they call it “random”.
