I often wonder when Dean Koontz is going to finish his Frankenstein trilogy, which is set in Louisiana.

My Dad was born and raised in Ruston so I think of when I was a kid and how we’d go visit family in the summers. I have very fond memories of eating watermelon on the porch and then trying to catch fireflies. I also remember fishing in Aunt Bessie’s creek and playing with Uncle Jimmy’s dogs. I think of it very fondly and I was very sad when everything happened in New Orleans. Also, we have a couple of Katrina rescues who come stay regularly at the kennel I work at and they are very close to my heart.

LouisianaGirl's avatar

well i just want everyone to know that we are NOT rednecks with alligators in our backyards….well some people have alligators and crawfish in our backyards. We lve parties, Mardi Gras, LSU, Saints, LA Tech, crawfish boils, football games, good times and everything in between. I love being from Louisiana and i never wanna move ever.

LouisianaGirl's avatar

Louisiana is a very great to make memories no matter what age you are. I am very glad that you are happy to help the victims out. When is the last time you were in Louisiana?

loser's avatar

@LouisianaGirl Did I imply that? If I did, I’m sorry!

Allie's avatar

New Orleans. Katrina. My best friends grandma. The South. Mardi Gras. Beads. L. Crawfish. Gumbo.. or Jambalaya.. or whatever it’s called. Food.

LouisianaGirl's avatar

did u imply what?

Allie's avatar

@LouisianaGirl Loser’s victims are animals. He works at an animal shelter. (Am I right?)

loser's avatar

@LouisianaGirl I’m hoping that you didn’t think that I think everybody from your fine state is a bunch of rednecks.

loser's avatar

@Allie Actually, I work at a kennel. Close!

LouisianaGirl's avatar

No I meant that it made you sad when we were struck by Katrina and some are close to your heart because some people say Louisiana deserved it. Sorry if I wasn`t clear.

Allie's avatar

Damn! So close. (Makes a mental note.)

loser's avatar

Deserved it?!! OMG!!! Who on earth would think such a thing?!! No, not at all!!! And I was referring to a couple of homeless dogs that found their way out to California.

buster's avatar

I love the accent some people down there have.

LouisianaGirl's avatar

o i understand

LouisianaGirl's avatar

buster: thank you creole cajun and just plain out country accents.
well ive gotta got ill be back on soon though. bye 4 now

@loser: my mother and her entire family are from Ruston. Dubach actually. I used to go every summer and loved it!

Since I am a Cajun girl from Lafayette, I think Louisiana is a beautiful, family oriented place, full of culture and southern hospitality. There is no better food on earth . We love the Saints, L.S.U., God and family. A stranger is your best friend. Crawfish are awesome any way you eat them. New Orleans is a blast. It’s fun, full of history, shopping and great food.

Education here could be a lot better. Louisiana politics are infamous ! All in all I do love living here.

When my wife and I took a cruise in 2001, our last stop was New Orleans and we had a wonderful time for the several hours we were able to spend there. The food was outstanding, jazz music was excellent where they were playing it in different venues, and the French Quarter was both interesting and beautiful, in my opinion. Another thing I found beautiful, as strange as it may sound, is the cemetaries in the city because they have all these ornate and exquisite above ground crypts and mausoleums.

I’m also very sad to see what has become of certain parts of Louisiana in the post-Katrina disaster years. The lack of action and irresponsibility by our government to help out the state is totally shameful on so many levels.

charliecompany34's avatar

well, hmmmmm, you say be completely honest as though we all had affairs down there, but yes, i vacationed in new orleans several years ago and the experience was one to remember. i spent time down there with my first wife and i try not to remember her. but new orleans at the time was very romantic and flavorful. i remember eating at “desire” and later throwing up on a side street after slurping “hurricanes” all night. honest enough?

I’ll see most of the state disappear in my lifetime.

Weird food, the world’s best music, friendly people, and unfriendly weather.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

i’ll be honest, the very first thing i think of is britney spears. and that’s not a negative thing (to me anyway), i just think of it because i’ve been listening to her since i was like 6 and therefor i have some really extensive knowledge on her hahaha.
but besides that, i don’t know. i’d kind of like to visit.

@LouisianaGirl: You seem rather insecure about others’ perceptions of your state. I can assure you that 99% of Fluther does not think everyone from Louisiana is a redneck.

tennesseejac's avatar

Its too far away because I love the music scene especially Tipitinas and recently I have not been so happy that LSU has been better than UT, but overall everyone I know from there is awesome. And, the state is shaped like an “L” which is pretty sweet.

tennesseejac's avatar

@petethepothead what percentage would that be for Tennessee?

I am from and still live in Lafayette, La. So what do I think? It’s home! Where the people are the best natural resource we have.

aprilsimnel's avatar

I don’t know much about the real Louisiana, to be honest. I think it’s a place where a lot of people are part French and in their way are more European than the rest of the US. I think swamps. I think spicy foods. I think hot. I think Tennessee Williams. I think people acting crazy and tourists boinking each other in the streets on Mardi Gras because that’s something they’d never do back in Omaha or wherever.

Yes, I think of Louisiana as one of the the id places in this country, and not in a bad way. I think jazz. And I think jazz could never have originated in any other place, becuase the unique meldings of peoples and traditions. So thanks, Louisiana. Thanks for jazz.

I love Louisiana- it is so steeped in history and culture. I have been there several times alone for Art Exhibitions and love hanging out in New Orleans in a pub and watching the drunken masses of tourists on St. Paddy’s day. Some fantastic memories there.
Though I have never been north of Baton Rouge there was very little about the state that I did not like.

@tennesseejac: Something like 99.2%

LouisianaGirl's avatar

@petethepothead I was just saying that because everyone else that I ask say that we are a lot of useless rednecks w/ alligators in our backyards. That`s why I said that to make sure that people are clear as to how it is from people who love there and how we dont appreciate that Louisiana deserved to be struck by Katrina. Also I am not insecure I am just a little over protective because what people have said about my home state.

tinyfaery's avatar

@LouisianaGirl Get over it. People talk all kinds of shit about Cali and I do not take it personally.

LouisianaGirl's avatar

@tinyfaery i understand that but its just that people talk about it all the time at least when they talk about yall its about yalls beaches, pretty girls, tans, and everything good.

tinyfaery's avatar

No way. Fruits & Nuts, baby. Most of America hates the west coast, especially Cali because we are open-minded and much more tolerant than the rest of the nation.

LouisianaGirl's avatar

well i c no problem with California I think that we are all equal

tinyfaery's avatar

Well me too, but we do have better weather. =)

mzgator's avatar

You definitely have better beaches in Cali. Ours are like swimming in a mud puddle!

Allie's avatar

Nothing wrong with swimming in mud puddles. Sometimes it’s fun. And at spas they charge you for it! Wtf?

LouisianaGirl's avatar

Yall are funny I am crackin up over here reading this stuff

tennesseejac's avatar

LSU sucks

LouisianaGirl's avatar

@tennesseejac I didn`t ask what you thought of my team I asked what you thought about Louisiana. You know what I am not getting into this with everyone I`m trying to make friends with everyone so i`m sorry and I respect that you have your own personal opinion and I`m sorry that I popped off. Please do except my apology.

fireside's avatar

lol, you don’t have to apologize for your school.
but if you really felt bad, you’d drop out and go to a school in Tenn.

LouisianaGirl's avatar

No i cant love LSU too much and I can`t leave my home state. But I have nothing against Tenn. though.

toangel's avatar

there are two Louisianas, Northern and Southern. Southern is where New Orleans is located. In the Northern part, people think of Shreveport. Here, the Whites are supreme and the blacks and other minorties know their places. There is massive segregation in the Northern part of Louisiana. Blacks hate the whites and the Whites same.
