I work in the entertainment field. We get a lot of CDs passing through, and some co-workers keep a list of the really freaky band names. Here’s a few of my favorites:
Honest Bob and the Factory to Dealer Incentives
Ed’s Redeeming Qualities
The Four Freshmen of the Apocalypse
Get The Hell Out of the Way of the Volcano
Here are several of them that I’ve collected over the years.
Slow Gherkin
Meat Whistle
Ultraspank
String Cheese Incident
Gat Rot
Lollipop Losers
Bile
Sweep the Leg Johnny
Hillbilly Devilspeak
Blood Drained Cows
The Fuck You Up’s
8 Stops 7
Shitlist
Hammertoes Shrink
Me First & the Gimmie Gimmies
Trailer Park Zorros
Ominous Seapods
Free Toy Inside
Dying Fetus
There’s a new band passing through, I don’t know if they’ll last, but they’re called Hoobastank. I just think that’s hilarious. Every time I see their name, I think “I wonder if they’re Hoobastanky?” lol. :)
The String Cheese Incident is pretty great. Also ”...and you will know us by the trail of the dead” and “I can make a mess like nobody’s business”, “and then I turned seven”, “BEDlight for blueEYES”, “Death Cab for Cutie”, “fountains of wayne”, “minus the bear”. All bands I love, but emo/pop punk/indie bands are really good at coming up with slightly ridiculous names.
I saw one the other day called Thriving Ivory and I just thought they were reaching…
Panic! At the Disco blech
Pretty much any rap artist especially if it starts with Lil’ or includes the word Pimp…
Nickleback I can’t even begin to respect your music with that ridiculous name
Mother’s Anthem What?
Jesus Christ and the Nail Knockers
Agitated Radio Pilot
Antarctica Takes It!
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate)
!!!
Giraffes? Giraffes!
Gravy Train!!!
iForward Russia!
Pants Yell!
Oh No! Oh My!
Volcano, I’m Still Excited!!
Pony Up!
Taxi Taxi!
Toad the Wet Sprocket, which actually came from a Monty Python sketch (written by Eric Idle) from one of their records.
And Death Cab for Cutie is the name of a song from a 60s band with another strange name, The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, and they sang that song in Magical Mystery Tour (otherwise known as Paul’s Folly. Oh, Paul.).
And who the hell came up with 30 Odd Foot of Grunts? Who? Why?
@jonsblond – Dead Milkmen were on my list. (also Hoobastank), Violent Femmes – (is that how you spell it?), Saliva, The Junipers, Limp Bizkit, Puddle of Mudd (I like ‘em, though!)
i also love those emo band names from like 2003. my friends and i had a game where you had to simply pick a 3 word sentence fragment and that was your emo/screamo band name, i.e. :
What Once Was
Thou Shall Not
Down the Pike
Merge to One
All Hopes Suspended
