What celebrity, politician or professional athlete do you know personally?

“Great Question” (0points)

there you are in a photograph on your desk at work with whoever and they say, “wait a minute, isn’t that whoever and you go, “yeah, well, we grew up together actually” or “he’s just a friend of the family.” and you go about your business like it’r really nothing…

to you it’s no big deal, but you have a following of those who either want front-row tix or “skybox” perks or set, studio or screen passes.

i have pix at my desk of derrick rose of the chicago bulls and education secretary arne duncan when he was head of chicago public schools. a photo of me and oprah and also the late IL senator paul simon—even the late actor and dancer gregory hines.

who do you know personally?

I know Goliath. he’s also the father in There’s Something About Mary, and the creepy drug dealer that gets a blowjob in Requiem for a Dream. :p

And just for fun, my mom used to walk Jerry Orbach’s dog as a kid. But it don’t count.

None, not a single one.

My mom went to high school with him. At Laguardia High School for Performing Arts. The same high school from Fame. She also went to school with Freddie Prinze, and a ton of other people. I mean that school cranked the stars out. Oh, and Keith David played Spawn in the animated series. She’s got great stories about him in dance class looking ridiculous in tights. I remember it every now and then when I watch Spawn and die laughing.

She grew up in a million+ penthouse apartment in Manhattan…famous people were about.

And uh… She gave James Lipton a massage when she went to see Keith David and some old classmates, one is now a producer, she’s a masseuse. pervs :P she actually got to be in a scene of one of his movies in the crowd just cause he wanted to throw her in while they were shooting.

And…I sorta know someone who is Cyndi Lauper’s nephew?

Does that count? I don’t think it does.

charliecompany34's avatar

@asmonet yeah! i remember freddie prinze from “chico and the man.” used to come on right after “sanford and son.” my uncle, by the way, had several appearances on sanford and son,” but sorry, he was not lemont’s close friend “rallo.” they always ask me was he “rallo?”

asmonet's avatar

And I went to high school with and knew this guy.

Also, thanks. :-P

asmonet's avatar

Okay, I think I’m done. ;)

I grew up with Joe Lieberman coming over for Shabbat dinner and no, I don’t agree with his politics.

Bruce Altman goes to my synagogue and I am friends with his daughter, since we went to elementary school together for a couple years.

I went to high school with this lady. She was on the cover of Newsweek last year, but I’m not sure if she’s famous famous or policy wonk famous.

And in the class behind me was Dan Vebber (sorry, can’t find a photo), who lovers of USian animation and fantasy shows know as a writer and story editor for Futurama, Buffy and American Dad.

I worked with a lot of celebrities on films and TV, but none of them became friends.

adreamofautumn's avatar

Don’t know him personally but I grew up with this guy around town. His sister was my dentist. One of my college roommates was the best friends with Bode Miller.
I went to a performing arts school in NYC, tons of them are going to be famous in a few years! Just wait and see!

A_Beaverhausen's avatar

i dont know if you guys watch mtv or not, but my roommate amanda has her own MADE eppisode.

shes not famous, but i think its legit?

asmonet's avatar

Oh, I forgot. My mom knew Danny Kaye pretty well. He kinda took her in as a kid in New York, she even got to stand behind the wooden slats of the ark in Two by Two during some performances and he’d make faces at her when he was turned away from the audience. Kinda AWESOME right? I mean. It was literally on Broadway. I’m jealous.

And Joe Gibbs I ran into a few times in my town as he lived there. But all he ever did was hand out pamphlets about Christianity. he’s a nice guy though, for real. :)

aprilsimnel's avatar

@asmonet – I… I love Danny Kaye.

What a mensch. A hot, ginger mensch.

charliecompany34's avatar

@asmonet see, i knew you knew more personalities. you are so connected!

wundayatta's avatar

I’m sorry, but who are all these people? I thought you wanted famous people!

adreamofautumn's avatar

@daloon didn’t you click my “this guy” link?
He’s super-famous!

charliecompany34's avatar

@daloon adam sandler? who doesnt know adam sandler? i mean, i am not a big fan, but i do know the face.

adreamofautumn's avatar

@charliecompany34 i’m not really a big fan either haha, but he is really nice. He goes to high school football games and gives keynote addresses at the graduations and whatnot when he’s home.

SuperMouse's avatar

Wait! I thought of one! I spent an afternoon with Vince Gill and his wife and baby (this was back in the 80’s) and watched their wedding video with them. Also, Kurt Russell went to the same elementary school I did.

casheroo's avatar

I’ve met local celebrities, but wouldn’t say I know them personally.

wundayatta's avatar

No, I can’t click on links using this computer. It takes half a day for them to open. In fact, this brings up one of my pet peeves. Why can’t people say what the link it, instead of remaining all mysterious about it? Maybe if it was worth it, I’d click, but otherwise, it’s too much trouble.

KatawaGrey's avatar

@asmonet: You know David Keith? He’s one of my favorite actors ever! I think he’s so under-rated. I didn’t know he was the voice of Goliath. I used to love Gargoyles.

I used to go to summer camp with Dawn Upshaw’s daughter. I had never heard of her, but apparently she’s a very famous opera singer. She’s really nice and her husband helped teach me to sail. Also, not sure if this counts, but my grandfather gave Brooke Shields her high school diploma and my mom went sailing with John Elway’s future in-laws, many years before he married his wife.

aviona's avatar

I went to high school with Max Thieriot.

He was in Catch That Kid, The Pacifier, The Astronaut Farmer, Nancy Drew, & Jumper…I have not seen a single one. But maybe you have!

When I was fifteen, I sold cigarettes semi-regularly to Joe Perry of Aerosmith.

Hulk Hogan used to work out at a gym near my house when I was about thirteen. He would talk to us kids as we hung around. Had a photo taken with him.

Gary Cherone from Extreme (later VanHalen) worked at the record store in a mall I also worked at. We chatted about music often.

I designed the sets for an ice show that Nancy Kerrigan starred in and produced with her husband. She worked directly with our team for about three months off and on.

I also designed a stage set for a private concert with Elton John and was lucky enough to briefly chat with him as he warmed up on piano.

Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band is a regular at the farm I work at now.

I met Mit Romney at a Christmas party this past year and chatted with his son, Tag and his wife.

I was the creative director for Harvard Lampoon’s 125th Anniversary bash. Conan O’Brien was our emcee. I was lucky enough to chat with him and his girlfriend a bit.

That’s about it.

asmonet's avatar

@cprevite: Hulk went to my church in Florida when I was growing up! In Clearwater, when did you know him??

asmonet's avatar

@KatawaGrey: Yeah! Haha, it’s weird to here Goliath curse on the phone and end sentences with the word ‘baby’. Very weird and more than a little disturbing. I don’t know him well, he’s more of my mom’s friend/classmate. Gargoyles for the win.

And I actually happened upon some YouTube videos of Dawn Upshaw a few weeks ago when I was wandering through some opera links of links of links, etc. Awesome!

cookieman's avatar

@asmonet: I was about thirteen, so that’d be around 1984. He spent a Summer in the Boston area for some reason and was working out at this gym in Medford.

asmonet's avatar

@cprevite: Ah, I ‘knew’ him in the 90s. :)

KatawaGrey's avatar

I just found out that my friend Chris was the first American baby born in Crete!
