“Great Question” (1points)

On social networking sites or the like have you ever been confused for either male or female while being the opposite? and if so what has been your reaction? Anger? Laughter? A furious yet self deprecating and hilarious rant?

All the time. Comes with the gender-neutral front.

dearest_prudence's avatar

yes, on airow

Allie's avatar

Why yes, yes they have.
Just today in fact not one, but two different people (new users, so I can forgive them) mistook me for a guy. I’m not sure how. I think “Allie” is a normally feminine name, and I use a pink pixel image as my avatar.
Oh well..
To clear up confusion, I am a girl. Thanks. =]

asmonet's avatar

Hahaha, everyone on Fluther gets their gender questioned at least once. Even the people with real names.

JellyB's avatar

Nope, not that i know of!! I, on the other hand, have mistaken others for being the wrong gender, and it’s usually a man that i’ve mistaken to be a woman. tee hee!

dearest_prudence's avatar

@JellyB – everyone already knows they are talking to a cat
silly kitty

lol

JellyB's avatar

@dearest prudence LOL! Not here they don’t! sigh I gotta start all over again…. ;P

Bluefreedom's avatar

People have rarely accused me of being of the female gender (which I’m not) here on Fluther and elsewhere. There have been times when I’ve guessed incorrectly on the genders of some Flutherites but they’ve made sure to set me straight, quick. =)

JellyB's avatar

@Bluefreedom “accused”? LOL! ;)

augustlan's avatar

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been mistaken for a man on Fluther. It’s happened a lot less now that I have a more elegant “A” as my avatar. I still kind of miss my old “A” sometimes.

Edited to add: I forgot to mention that it doesn’t bother me at all. I usually just let the individual know that they’ve guessed wrong, in a friendly way.

sandystrachan's avatar

Nearly everyone online says i am female, even on some sites that i have a profile photograph.
Just for the record i am , male.
Where else in the world is the name “Sandy” male ? And why does most people assume “Sandy” is a girl?

Dr_C's avatar

@augustlan i must confess.. before i saw the photobucket group i thought you were a man…
i’m sorry :S

shrubbery's avatar

I was mistaken for a middle-aged man.
I am a 16 year old girl.
I laughed :P
I was a little bit flattered actually, about the middle aged part at least haha.

augustlan's avatar

@Dr_C Clearly, you are not the first ;-)

@sandystrachan I thought you were female, too, even though I have heard of males named Sandy (short for Alexander, usually).

Bluefreedom's avatar

@augustlan. The newer A is more superlative and refined. A fine choice on your part.

JellyB's avatar

@sandystrachan I did hear of a male Sandy in Brothers & Sisters once….. ;)

sandystrachan's avatar

It doesn’t really bother me if someone online thinks i am female, i just laugh it off (depends the situation, they may get told they were wrong)
I hate my birth name (Alexander) and have always been called sandy ( along with other name) :D
Brothers & Sisters never heard of it

JellyB's avatar

@shrubbery LOL! I once thought someone i had been speaking to was a young girl, and it turned out he was a man in his 40s! We’re friends now. :D

MacBean's avatar

People are often confused about my gender. I tell them that’s okay because so am I.

MrMontpetit's avatar

Yes, usually on forums. It makes me feel like my style of writing points to the feminine, homosexual side. 0.o

syz's avatar

Mine is usually guessed incorrectly.

syz (35938points)“Great Answer” (1points)
EmpressPixie's avatar

Mine is generally guessed correctly here, but my Twitterstream starts with “bob” so everyone kind of assumes I’m a guy over there. Oops! (It’s named after a toy of mine.)

It doesn’t bother me. Oh! Except for when BoingBoing.net was giving away undies via twitter and they only included the ladies following them in the drawing. I was very sad. It was nice underwear.

asmonet's avatar

^lol4rl.

Mr_M's avatar

Never had a problem.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

I’ve never had a problem with that. I guess they figure most men aren’t going to be a big fan of Murder She Wrote. It’s more of a female show.

This is another example of wishing our profiles had to disclose our gender. There’a MANY times on here that I have no clue as to who’s what.

Darwin's avatar

Frequently. In fact, it happens to me on the phone, at the fast-food drive through, and every now and then face to face.

I find it amusing, although at times puzzling as I make no effort to hide my gender.

What difference does it really make to anyone except my husband?

elijah's avatar

If I don’t use my own picture, then people usually assume I’m a guy. There’s not many girls named Elijah I guess.
Actually, even when I do use my own picture, some people think I’m a guy :-(

aprilsimnel's avatar

I’ve been mistaken for much younger, but not for any sex than my own. I am too girly by half.

May2689's avatar

Hmmmm not really, not even here in fluther… but then again, how can you be mistaken with a nickname such as MAY and an avatar of Audrey Hepburn?

casheroo's avatar

I think someone on here asked me…which sort of shocked me, since I talk about my son, childbirth, breastfeeding…i dunno, I just figured people would know I was a gal from that. And my avatar. But, it doesn’t bother me.

getoffmylawn's avatar

Occasionally. I just look at it as having been adequately neutral in my “voice”.

wundayatta's avatar

@shrubbery: you might get a hoot out of this: I always thought you were a thirtyish lesbian.

@elijahsuicide: as far as I’m concerned, you are all woman!

@all: I think people normally know my gender, but there was one person recently who said he didn’t know. I did all I could to keep him confused. As far as I’m concerned, if you can’t figure it out by reading what I write, you can’t be reading what I write.

elijah's avatar

@daloon thank you, sir.

VzzBzz's avatar

Yes, many times but I have no problem setting it straight. Ask.

A_Beaverhausen's avatar

i used to have a unisex avatar, and in heated conversations i would often be called sexist against women, and mistaken for a dude. ha, i dont see how thats possible!

jca's avatar

no one has ever questioned my gender when they’re on top of me.

jca (36062points)“Great Answer” (4points)
VzzBzz's avatar

@jca Clever, I like it because, well… still ambiguous.

essieness's avatar

I don’t guess my gender has ever been questioned. Not publicly at least. I’m definitely a chick.

Dr_C's avatar

@jca best answer so far

SeventhSense's avatar

@elijahsuicide
I certainly wouldn’t consider you anything other than an intelligent woman.
@Dr C
Yes, but I’m a straight guy for the record.

dearest_prudence's avatar

@jca – I like man on man porn have any vids?
if so url please
giggles

cak's avatar

Yes, on another site. I thought it was funny, but did tell him that the last time I checked, I was all woman. I didn’t lose any sleep over it, no biggie.

jca's avatar

I’m a girl. The other answer i thought of was “No one ever questioned my gender when they were inside of me.”

jca (36062points)“Great Answer” (3points)
VzzBzz's avatar

@jca Still great if you’d used that, we’d never know.

VS's avatar

Oh for a dime for everytime someone on-line has called me “Dude…” Yes I have been mistaken for the opposite sex a time or three before. But just so you guys know, I’m a girl.

Dansedescygnes's avatar

Yep. I’ve been accused of being a girl plenty of times. I’m gay and I possess several feminine qualities. I don’t blame them.

DrBill's avatar

<———Picture of an old dude with a beard, holding a huge cat, name like Bill, and I have been mistaken for a womam because I think women are equals.

MacBean's avatar

@DrBill—Well, at least you’re not likely to take it as an insult!

DrBill's avatar

Well as the picture shows, I do have a… er… ah… cat

dearest_prudence's avatar

@DrBill- PUSS you have a big puss!!!
I once posted a pic of me rubbing my puss!!!

Dansedescygnes's avatar

@dearest_prudence

You’re talking about a cat, right? ;)

DrBill's avatar

@dearest_prudence

I’d like to see that…

shrubbery's avatar

@daloon, hahaha that’s a little bit specific… can I ask what made you think that? :P

Amoebic's avatar

@VS I’ve noticed that some have gotten into the habit of dude being gender-neutral and applied rather generously (or is it just a west-coast thing?), so the person referring to you as “dude” may not necessarily assume you’re of a particular gender as much as they may be subscribing to that aspect of slang.
The alternative being “dudette,” a goofy term that no one seems to like, which died around the same time as my lace-trimmed acid-washed denim shorts.

MacBean's avatar

@Amoebic It’s not just a west coast thing!

augustlan's avatar

Seriously, dude! ;-)

VS's avatar

@Amoebic No it’s not just a west coast thing. Those of us on the right coast use the term gender non-specific, too. And I totally agree with you on that silly dudette thing. I have also been called ‘man’, as in “you don’t know what the hell you’re talkin’ about, man” and I realized right away THAT wasn’t gender specific. ~.~

mangeons's avatar

Everybody thinks that I’m a guy, but it happens a lot less now that I have my cute monkey. :)

But it doesn’t really bother me. ;)

wundayatta's avatar

@shrubbery—I always associated you with Tinyfaery. Maybe because I saw the two of you sharing an opinion a few times? I don’t know. Also, “shrubbery” doesn’t seem very girly girlish to me. It’s more neutral. Hence a kind of in=between sexuality. Who knows? That’s what I thought.

simonPARASITE's avatar

happens to me sometimes.
i just laugh it off.
