WASHINGTON – Describing government’s failure to inspect 95 percent of food processing plants as “a hazard to the public health,” President Obama promised Saturday to bolster and reorganize the nation’s fractured food-safety system.

“In the end, food safety is something I take seriously, not just as your president, but as a parent,” Obama said in his weekly address.

The call for fundamental changes in the nation’s food-protection system follows a massive salmonella outbreak in peanut products that has sickened more than 700 people, killed nine — including three Minnesotans — and led to one of the largest recalls in U.S. history.

Obama said he will ask Congress for $1 billion in new funds to add inspectors and modernize laboratories.

I don’t know enough about it to have an opinion on whether it’s owing to the structure and mission of the FDA that these problems have occurred or not. But any large organization is bound to have its own brand of inefficiency and nuttiness. Do you have information that supports or refutes the implication that some kind of systemic problem within the agency is responsible for these complaints?

Actually, thinking back the last two years, huge beef recalls, ecoli in spinach, bad tomatoes, bad fowl then baby formula now peanuts.

Yes, I think there is a huge lack of “oversight”.

Great question

I think it does need revamped. I know years ago they suggested putting labels on our fruits and veggies so we would know what was genetically modified or what had hormones put in it. But it was overturned quickly by the food producers. I for one want to know how my food is produced. I will admit to being an organic shopper. I can’t always afford it but when I can I go that route. The side effects are popping up everywhere with exposure to all the hormones and genetically modified produce.

ZOMG Yes.

<—knows full well that it’s a lackey for agribusiness. Just look up aspartame and Rumsfeld.

@KalWest, thanks. Taken at face value, that certainly seems to support an affirmative answer.
