I’m looking to buy the Homedics SBM.500H, since I suffer from muscle tension in the upper part of my back. Do you have one, and if so, what is your experience with it? Is there anything you can recommend?

I have a Homedic back massager that I bought at Walgreens at Christmas time. I bought one for my husband also. My problem is mostly in my lower back and this massager has been a wonderful release from pain for me. My husband also enjoys his very much.

The one problem I have is that I am fairly tall so the upper back portion stops just short of where I need it unless I pull it up in the chair to a point higher than it is supposed to be, However, if I do that it will work nicely on tension in my upper back.

Also, with this particular massager it is important not to lean too hard on it as your back will be sore. Adjust how much you are leaning on it and it works fine.

I don’t know what model number this thing is, but it was labeled as a Shiatsu Cushion with Heat.

It’s decent maintenance for in between real massages, to keep your muscles soft and supple. I’d try to find one that is heated, too. Heat is very important for healthy massage. But if it’s becoming frequent or chronic, you may consider seeing a regular massage therapist. Some even accept insurance. And it’s not forever… if it helps, you can go less and less frequently, and eventually just get a massage when you want to enjoy one. Just make sure you go to a reputable therapist, and tell him/her to start out very slow and “warm up” the muscle before digging into any knots because it will leave you sore. Just like @Darwin says leaning into the chair massager will leave you sore, it’s the same for anything that you let poke into your muscle without being warmed up first. Your muscles are wrapped in “fascia” which is thixotropic (starts as a gel and sort of melts with heat and manipulation). If you dive into this stuff without warming it up, you cause damage and it won’t help your situation.

Good luck! **Giving you a cyber massage**

They feel kind of weird. I rather hire someone to give me a real massage. Especially to get out the knots in my back.
