Is the language of the Romani similar to the dialects of India?

I went to a Romani cultural museum in the Czech Republic once and there was a whole wall dedicated to explaining where the Romani came from. Most agree that they originally emigrated from India, so I would expect their language to be similar to northern Indian languages.
