60’s Elvis.

@oratio In the early summer of 1977, I stood in line for tickets for Elvis for a friend’s mother. Stood for hours, got the tickets. He died 2 weeks before coming here to perform. She kept the tickets. I never really liked him myself.

oratio's avatar

@chyna Wow. Bummer. I am no hard core fan either, but to me it would be like seeing the pyramids. Elvis and people like James Dean, Clark Cable, Steve McQueen and Greta Garbo. That’s history.

Led Zeppelin.

A question I ask myself from time to time is “who is in their prime now, that I’m not listening to?”

Maria Callas, Jussi Bjoerling, Enrico Caruso, Renata Tebaldi, Jenny Lind…

@Jeruba How curious. Two “ancient” swedish performers there. Jussi had a fantastic voice though. The others to.

The Beatles, The Kinks, Sly & The Family Stone, Aretha Franklin, Mozart, Louis Armstrong (before his prime, actually), Gene Krupa, Cream, Billie Holiday, The Smiths, Nirvana, The Jackson 5…

You know what, I can’t do this; it’d take up pages.

@dverhey – I did see Beck in his prime, about 4 times. The man. could put on. a show! Yes, indeed!

Nah, I’d go for someone like Joan Baez, or that whole era and style. Especially live. Beatles you can still get on CD/old videos etc. I don’t think I would have been that impressed.

DeanV's avatar

Oh, I agree. I say Beatles for pure bragging rights.

@Bluefreedom I saw James Taylor with Carly Simon in concert. I can’t remember the year, but it was late 70’s. Great concert.

Bluefreedom's avatar

@chyna. He’s passed through here in Phoenix a few times over the years but I’ve never been able to make it to one of his shows. I’m going to make a more concerted effort to do so in the future if he comes by again. Friends who have seen him in concert have all said, like you did, that it was great performance.

I used to go to a lot of concerts when I was at university. Sometimes the concerts came to us on campus, too. Some of the ones I did get to see included:

The Doobie Brothers
Electric Light Orchestra
Blood, Sweat & Tears
Chicago
Earth, Wind & Fire
Van Halen
James Taylor
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Santana
Richie Havens
Jethro Tull
Dr. John, aka Dr. John the Night Tripper
Jefferson Airplane
Guess Who
Andres Segovia
Celia Cruz
Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine (back when they were the house band at Big Daddy’s)
Mongo Santamaria
B.B. King
John Sebastian
Kinky Friedman
Vienna Boys’ Choir
The Canadian Brass
P.D.Q. Bach (aka Peter Schikele)
David Munrow and the Early Music Consort of London
Waverly Consort

I even got to go to some of Leonard Bernstein’s children’s concerts as well as many, many other groups from all genres of music. Just about all of them were wonderful experiences, except for The Judds, who refused to come out of their bus for 2 hours because they didn’t like the way the venue was set up.

But I never got to see the Beatles live. However, I understand it would have been actually impossible to hear anything. Even they couldn’t hear anything above the screaming.
