How can I dump an oracle schema to a LOCAL file over a network connection from sqlplus?

Using sqlplus to connect to a database using tnsnames. I just want to dump the entire contents to a local file without doing something like connecting and spooling.

By connecting and spooling are you excluding the exp/imp commands (or expdb/impdb in 10g)?

I think exp is your best option. It is possible to use a SQL script to generate create table statements and then also insert statements, but this a horrendously long winded way to get this done.
