“Great Question” (0points)

I’m a male student traveling to Cairo, Egypt in four days. I will be staying from Sept to January. What kind of clothes should i be packing, keeping in mind the cultural issues surrounding some kinds of clothing.

I’d rather not be a tourist beacon, but at the same time I sweat a lot in Boston Ma…

Light colors, cotton. Just don’t wear white tennis shoes or a fanny pack. Sure fire signs of an American.
Cairo is a very modern city and it is amazing to see the ancient great pyramid loom over this modern metropolis.
The most amazing thing to me was seing this modern marvel of a city, then a few yards away seeing people living in houses of mud and straw bricks, just like the Bible stories of Moses.
I am glad I went but I wouldn’t want to go again. I could just sense corruption and I felt like the walls had ears.

Long pants, loose, light fabric, layers.

Some sweaters.
It can be f-f-f-ricking cold in the nights in those areas around the equator.

Let me just say I am unbelievably jealous. Egypt is my dream destination. HAVE FUN!

Shorts are instant tourist-beacons. So are safari vests. Most men there dress very western- khakis or other lighter-fabric pants, casual dress shirts. Standard office-working-white-people garb will get you few looks, if you are a man.

Here’s a random picture I found on flickr by searching “cairo people.”

It’s pretty westernized, as you can see.

@aphilotus thanks for the answer.

You guys think i should pick up said khakis in the US or wait til i get there?

aphilotus's avatar

Do it when you get there. Outside of the US, tailoring and other sartorial endeavors are much, much cheaper.

Also, local businesses tend to carry the kinds of products better suited to local needs- you’ll find a wider variety of thin, breathable fabric if you wait and get things there.

(Caveat: If you are vertically blessed or, uh, circumferentially endowed, like many Americans, it might be better to get new clothing here. But if you are one of the thin and short and fit into large or medium T-Shirts, wait)

It’s you again! Whoever said Cairo is a modern city, go there again…lol if you are judging by the City Stars mall, well then yes

there really isn’t any cultural clothing in Egypt, most/all guys just wear shorts and t-shirts you really wouldn’t sweat

@rebbel it can get “chilly” but a long sleeve shirt or light jacket does the trick

@gailcalled layers? He’s going to the fucking desert, there is literally sand in the streets and sidewalk…

@aphilotus khakis are an awesome idea

once again, feel free to contact me if you need help or want to know what to visit, may I ask which part of Cairo you’re staying at?

hoiioh's avatar

@bluedoggiant hahaha. Thanks for the info, on this question and my other regarding SIM cards. I’ll be living in Zamalek at a dorm for AUC. Ill make sure to add you on twitter :D

@bluedoggiant: Does this particular dessert have 24 hrs of sunlight? Doesn’t it cool down at night? And I am not talking about turtle necks and down parkas.

Judi's avatar

It will probably cool down to 70 degrees.

edit: That’s desert.

@gailcalled , they could have ice cream!

bluedoggiant's avatar

gailcalled I dont want to have a cat fight but if you must:/, ill have to ask you, layers of what? short sleeve shirts? silk?

gailcalled's avatar

@bluedoggiant: Sleeveless cotton tank, short sleeved cotton shirt, long sleeved cotton shirt, hoodie, light-weight gore-tex rain jacket, ripcord pants that zip off part-way to make shorts.

Why on earth would you want a cat fight with me? Grammar and rhetoric at twenty paces might be fucking awesome, however.
