How do I set up a wireless network with a recently purchased macbook, an airport express, and a cable modem? I really need basic, step by step info because I’m a dummy when it comes to this stuff.

Follow the instructions in the manual that came with the Airport Express.

Plug the ethernet outlet into the cable modem.
Then, connect the cable modem to the airport using another ethernet cable.
After a short while, the airport should flash yellow then turn green (assuming it is plugged in).
On your macbook, the airport bar in the upper right corner should have 4 bars if your computer is very close to the airport.
Using airport utility (which can be found in your utilities folder), set up the airport by giving it a name and a password, and also set up a secure network with a name and password as well.

Do what @shilolo said. If you’re new to a Mac, don’t overthink it. Unlike a stuff with a PC, it really does go together the way they tell you.

My tip is to make sure that your wireless password is at least 5 characters long. If it’s less than that, then any houseguest you have with a PC laptop will not be able to log into your network.
