How come some people spit constantly?

Some people (it seems like mostly men) spit constantly. They spit gobs out of car windows, on the street, anywhere they can. I am wondering why some people feel a need to spit constantly and others survive without spitting.

I see it being done a lot in sports.
Both men and women (some, not all) who play soccer do it.
Maybe they produce more saliva because they are doing sport.

I know i did it when i was younger (in my teens) mainly because the big boys were doing it, and it was considered (absurdly) part of being a tough guy.

They do it because they’re assholes. having nearly been spit on many times by such people, I say that with all seriousness.

My mother once asked my father that very question. He said, “What do you do with it?”

“I swallow,” she said.

“I can’t believe you’d want to swallow that,” he replied.

That’s the closest I ever got to finding out. Me, I wouldn’t have married a man with such a disgusting habit. My father was very refined in other ways, but he did grow up with a passel of brothers way out in the country. Perhaps there’s a clue there.

This is the thing in the world that probably pisses me off the most. It is so disgusting. But it seems to be completely normal and accepted among males of my age group (early 20’s). IT IS SO GROSS. It’s like.. do what the rest of us do.. and swallow your spit. Or if you must spit it out, do it in a bathroom or atleast into a tissue. ahhhh you have awoken the angry beast inside me with this question.. major pet peeve city.

My dad does that all the time and I don’t understand. I personally don’t have excess spit and mucus that needs to be hocked up every 20 minues, but maybe it varies person to person? I never thought about it, but I think it’s just more of a habit.

It seems to be extremely prevalent in sports, but I don’t get it. I have played intense sports and run competitively and it has never been a problem for me. I think it is a habit more than a necessity. Also cultural, here women spit as much as men and omg, forgive me my feminist friends, I think it looks even more disgusting to see a woman do it! I always think you should know better! To make it worse, no one wears shoes, yukkkkkk!!
