Money can certainly allow you to be happy. I’m not sure if that’s “buying happiness”, but I’m sure that people who are dirt poor and can’t afford a place to live are most likely not too happy. Money bringing happiness isn’t necessarily just with Maseratis and iPhones. Even the most basic things you need money to have.
For example, listening to music makes me very happy. In order to have recordings of music, I need money. In order to get instruments to play music, I need money. So it can definitely indirectly lead to things that make you happy.
Everyone has their own experiences and thinks they can turn it into a universal statement, but I don’t really think they can. Just because some people didn’t enjoy being wealthy doesn’t mean all wealthy people are miserable, just as not all poor people are miserable. It’s not the case at all.
