Where are the nerds at!

I cannot seem to find any nerds in Tucson, AZ. I just moved here with my boyfriend and am in desperate need of some nerds to hang out with and talk to about RPGs, Magic the Gathering, sci fi movies, etc. Where are you people?!

*NOT looking for creeps. Got enough of that back home. Thanks

I am a nerd, but why the hell are you posting a craigslist ad on fluther?

Iclamae's avatar

I find fluther less… sketchy.

Also, I guess I’m more looking for nerdy places to go and things to do in Tucson than people. I’d rather meet people in person by accident anyway. Sorry, should have clarified.

“nerd seeks nerd for role play. NSA. your pic gets mine. GA if you’re interested. no drama.”

I’d throw down some UNO cards with you, but I’m in a different state. You will have to find some other boll weevil to kick tumbleweeds with.

Too bad the biggest nerd I know is moving to SF.

meetup groups

Some of them look pretty nerdy.

Iclamae's avatar

@phoenyx , that looks incredibly helpful. Thanks very much.

Where’s back home?

@phoenyx You are a kind and thoughtful person! What a nice thing to do for lclamae! You are a “Fluther Sweetheart!”

they work at best buy.

Is there a local university? Hang out there. Maybe see if they have any nerdy-sounding organizations. Otherwise, hang out near the computer science department.

Don’t forget the local comic book shops. Nerd heaven!

Iclamae's avatar

:) Thanks guys. I’m moved here from BAltimore and the university had a nerd club. This one doesn’t but I’ll try the comic book stores and meetups ^^ The RPG one looks pretty good.

answerjill's avatar

Yeah, I went to college in Baltimore. My school was pretty much full of nerds—Bet you can guess which one? HOPSFA, anyone?

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@charliecompany34 those aren’t nerds, those are geeks.

Iclamae's avatar

HOPSFA for the win

Is nerd synonymous with kids who play video games now? I’m so out of touch.

evegrimm's avatar

I saw some just the other day at UA…wait, was that you?!

For real, though, you could probably find exactly the type of people you’re talking about just by wandering around the Student Union…while I was studying with a friend, we saw not one, but two groups playing Magic, and that was within a relatively small radius.

I know, also, that the local Bookmans and B&N have Sci-Fi book/movie events, so that might be a place to meet people.

Iclamae's avatar

ooh, that’s true. No it wasn’t me. But I know where you’re talking about. They have a MAgic tournament each month but I don’t play competitively. Still, it might be something to hang out at.
And Bookman’s sounds cool. I wasn’t sure what they were. We don’t have them in baltimore

I believe a nerd would tell you not to end a sentence with a preposition. Also, they might request that you end questions with question marks.

Long story short…..one just arrived.

AstroChuck's avatar

@Shuttle128- It’s grammatically okay to end an English sentence with a preposition.

Iclamae's avatar

I just reread my original post. I’m sorry the grammar is so bad. I should have known better. :)

Shuttle128's avatar

@AstroChuck Ah, you are right; in most cases it is okay. In this case the “at” is extraneous because the phrase, “Where are the nerds?,” is complete without it.

AstroChuck's avatar

@Shuttle128- But that has nothing to do with ending a sentence with “at.” That’s just a redundancy. For example: What are you looking at? is a completely proper sentence. To my knowledge, the only language where you can’t end a sentence in a preposition is Latin.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

If someone told me that I can’t end a sentence with a preposition, I’d change the sentence to read “Where are the nerds at, asshole?”

eponymoushipster's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra apparently gailcalled is wearing an @AstroChuck mask tonight.

Shuttle128's avatar

@AstroChuck Yes, that’s what I was getting at. It is perfectly okay to use “at” at the end of a sentence as long as it isn’t redundant. If it is redundant, it is poor grammar. The “can’t use a preposition at the end of a sentence” came from linguists trying to apply Latin rules to English, even though it is a good majority Germanic. Anglo-Saxon German and French came together to form what we call English today so we cannot fully apply grammar rules of German or Latin to English. I understood what I was trying to say, but I didn’t get it across very well and misused a frequently misused rule to explain what I was trying to get at.

@evelyns_pet_zebra lol That was great. I guess I’d deserve that for not understanding that terrible preposition myth.
