How do I clean a razor?

“Great Question” (1points)

I have a Schick Quattro (the pink one) women’s razor that just gets clogged with hair. I swear I’m not a hairy beast and this has never happened with other razors that I’ve used. I think the “safety wires” that are supposed to protect you from cutting yourself create this problem. I’ve tried running it under water, using a tack, and shaking it under water, but none of this gets the hair out. Thoughts?

….. get a small ultrasonic cleaner…... you’ll be able to use for a lot of tasks !

Put the razor in a glass of rubbing alcohol to clean & sterilize the blades.

I have that one too. Usually running it under the tap helps.. if not, I’d just change blades.

@kirforce Might I ask what type of shaving cream you are using?

I tap the heck out of that thing on the edge of the sink. I’m sure you’ve done this but it’s all I got. I hope someone knows some magic. Razors are expensive.

Try using your finger to pull the air out. JUST MAKE SURE TO RUB WITH THE BLADE! In the opposite direction you would shave with. From the top of the blade down.

whenever I shave, every few swipes I run the blade in the opposite direction on the palm of my hand. I know most people would say it’s dangerous, but I’ve been doing it since I started shaving, and I have never, ever cut myself doing it. I’ve cut myself billions of times shaving “correctly” though lol

How about using an old toothbrush to brush parallel to the blades, so the bristles can get between them?

Of course, the geek in me prefers @virtualist ‘s ultrasonic cleaner idea, or a blast of canned air

If you have a small container, like a (clean) yogurt container or other small tupperware, you can fill that with some water and then “swish” the razor back and forth in that. (Works for me!)

Alternatively, instead of rubbing it on your hand, you could rub it on an old towel (works best going from left to right rather than, er…“north and south”.) How does one describe those directions?

poofandmook's avatar

@Evegrimm: Up and down, back and forth/side-to-side?

evegrimm's avatar

@poofandmook, I was avoiding “up and down” so as not to confuse the OP! “north and south” may be the best we have…either that or “back and forth”. Hmm.

This is the very reason that I always get razors without safety wires! It just takes a LOT more doing to get them clean than one without those wires. The above techniques will work (swishing in water, using a toothbrush etc.) but the one time I got a Schick Quattro I found it to be so annoying that I gave up and just bought a new razor.

@poofandmook Lurve, I reccomend the same thing.

I’d also suggest trying a high end Gillette product.

oddly enough, the best razor I’ve ever used is a Target brand, bright pink razor with a white grippy thing on the handle. I like that better than all the fancy ones, and I have tried every one.

Use a nail brush or something similar with bristles (old toothbrush that no one will use). Gently brush the hairs from under the bars.

@SpatzieLover I use soap, is that a bad thing?

Update: I got so frustrated that I ended up ripping off the safety wires and now i’m pretty sure the blades will take off my skin because they aren’t aligned anymore. I’m going back to the Venus. I think an old toothbrush would do the job… a tack nail was too destructive apparently.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@kirforce If it’s bar soap, then yes. One, it’ll clog the razor, two, it’ll clog your pores (and cause those little red bumps on your legs)

I use a Venus, too…expensive, but good
