Where can I find out about digs in the Mediterranean for an aspiring archaeologist?

“Great Question” (1points)

I really want to do archaeology, and I want to do a bit of field work abroad in the beginning of the summer. I looked at the AIA website, which is what all my profs recommend, but I’m not that interested in them, because they’re all things that every previous student has done. I guess I’m looking for something totally original.

Has anyone had any experience with this? What database or catalogue have you looked through?

Join an Archaeology society and look through their journal. You will find a lot of choices. Many years ago, I was interested in becoming an archaeologist, and I went on several sites that were arranged by my college instructor. My favorite was a visitation to the Los Angeles La Brea Tar Pits

@Mtl_zack, Have you run across this blog? It seems pretty comprehensive.

It may be difficult to find a dig that will take an undergrad student with no dig experience, which is probably why students seem to do the same digs over and over.

I can’t answer your question, but just wanted to let you know, from a tourist standpoint, I was intrigued with the Akrotiri excavation site, on the island of Santorini. I took a tour through the site in 2000 and specifically the frescos and pottery being unearthed were incredibly beautiful and were dated approximately 1600 BC. See ya….Gary/wtf

yup, was just about to also say Santorini. Probably the best reason to become an archaeologist. It’s the closest thing to “Unearthing Atlantis” as Pellegrino puts it (a wonderful book to read even if you have nothing to do with archaeology). I cannot imagine any other site anywhere in the world that would be as interesting.
