Can some one explain why "getting off subject" in a question is such a no no here?

I seriously don’t mind playing by the rules, but it helps if I know why the rule is in place. When we get off the subject it’s only mimicking a real conversation, and we learn things, or laugh about things or get exposed to valuable opinions that we would have missed otherwise. I mean, there is only so much that can be said in any one question, so then it dies out. Getting off subject kind of keeps it alive and allows for so much more interaction.
So—what is wrong with it?
Thank you.
