I think a digital photo frame is a good gift. They are pretty inexpensive, and you can preload some pictures of you and your so.

A decent bottle of wine and some gourmet (insert food, like: cheese, cured meats, smoked salmon, etc). It shouldn’t set you back too much, you can all enjoy it together, and it seems classy enough.

To add to what @peedub said, Hickory Farms has some excellent gift boxes you can pick from.

I like the idea of a wine and food basket. You can personalize it (and save some money) by making some of the foods yourself. There are a lot of very easy candy, cookie, and snack recipes online.

You could also make them a Christmas morning basket with really good coffee, matching mugs, gourmet pancake mix, flavored syrups, etc. That way no one has to really worry about breakfast/brunch. Or, they could save it for a lazy Sunday morning.

Just make sure they drink wine if you’re going that route.

Gourmet type foods, especially those in gift packaging that makes it cool, are always a good neutral choice.

I agree with @avvooooooo make sure they drink wine. I don’t and I have bottles of wine hanging around my house for years, its not a very useful gift for me, but I guess the thought counts.

Do you live in different cities? Can you bring stuff from your city? Like in Memphis we have a confectioner who makes candies you can’t get anywhere else (I think the recipe is patented) Elvis t-shirts, etc.

Food or candles are always good. If they don’t like the food they can still gracefully tell you it was wonderful. If they don’t like the candles they can say, “It was so great I already used it!” hat way they can avoid the embarrassment of you discovering your gift at their next garage sale. Perishable is always good.

Good coffee, if they drink it, tends to go over very well.

Soap also tends to go over well, if it is scented well and looks (or is) handmade. It will definitely get used, so it doesn’t “sit around”. And who wouldn’t want soap that smells like Pecan Pie or brownies?

@Judi good point about the candles. I don’t use candles so I always regift them to other people. Gosh I suck—don’t bring me wine or candles.

I would definitely go with some wine if they’re wine drinkers. Perhaps find out if they like reds or whites, dry or sweet, then pick out some nice cheeses to go with it. And homemade goodies are loved by all, and say that you really care. Some nice ginger cookies, or homemade candies would be very sweet. Pun not intended.

If they are wine drinkers those wine glass rings are a nice gift, so people know which glass is theirs.

I remember that one gift that was really appreciated by my (ex) S.O. was a nicely framed photo of him that I took….just him. They did not have any photos of him that were recent. I took him to a park and took lots of pix. If you have one of him that is nice, use that.

Don’t put yourself in the pix….I learned that the hard way. It may scare your s.o. (even if he says he loves only you.) Also, it is presumptuous….I know that even if they are fab and really feel you are the “choice” for their son…it’s even more magnanimous to leave yourself out of the pic…..till the engagement….:)

Or….find a really cute baby photo of him and frame that….or one of the whole family that is old….make a copy and have it framed.
