Of course it isn’t safe.
As an athlete, you burn more calories per day than most people, on average. Your body needs calories to function! When you don’t eat properly, your body will use your muscles for energy as a first resort. Do you want to lose your muscles? Aren’t they critical for an athlete?
Go get the book Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle by Tom Venuto (it’s an ebook that’s around, if you look for it). Learn to calculate how many calories you burn in a day, and then reduce that number by no more than 15%-20%. You will lose fat at a steady rate without sacrificing your muscle. I’ve been doing this for two months and I have lost 10 pounds. Some weeks I only see a difference of half-a-pound, but at least I know I’m holding on to my precious muscle.
When anyone loses any weight for any diet, the main concern should be to grow muscle and keep it. As an athlete, you should have known this.
