When I was really little, I did.
I still draw my trees like he did.

I never could because our local PBS wouldn’t run them in order. One week we’re working on a quiet (if strangly avocado-hazed) lake, next week we’re almost done with a mountain top.

I loved watching Bob. Not only was was watching him paint enjoyable, but, his voice – it was just so darn relaxing!

Do not think for a second that I didn’t want to buy this for when I can’t sleep.

Nope I am way too young to say yes, but my grandmother did, and I have like 10 of the paintings hanging around the house.

No, but I liked watching him. He was sort of mesmerizing – that is the only explanation I have for watching him when I was so young. (That and we only had 3 channels, including PBS, for several years.)

His happy trees are the best.

Bob Ross made the world a better place.
However, while he taught people they could paint, his techniques only taught people how to make Bob Ross paintings.
An artist can’t take that into a gallery and expect people not to call them on it.
Great show though.

No, but I’ve downloaded episodes to watch and listen to. His voice gives me chills and raises the hair on the back of my neck. If someone could tell me why that would be just great (and it will be ‘our little secret’).

@ubersiren no I don’t think so. I have seen some reruns, and I couldn’t get in to it. I like the way I paint.

Oh, well I imagine if you have your own style of painting that you’d want to stick with that. He was never revered for his talent by his peers. He’s a whole different ball game.

I totally did. I was about 8 years old, and really getting into acrylic paints (we had a local artist who came and painted with us in art class at school), and I loved painting along with Bob! It always took me a lot longer than him, so I’d be working on my painting for hours after the show ended, but I loved it! Especially the happy trees!

My daughter was about 6 or 7, and she asked me to paint with her one day after school. She had one of those cheap water color sets. So I sat with her and tried making some of the happy little strokes I had seen him do on countless episodes.

Hey, I thought. This is pretty cool! So I got out some acrylic paints we had for painting some cermaic figuirines we had bought, and wha lah!! I was painting!! I was amazed by how easy it was, and on my third try, I had an actual landscape that was worthy of framing!

So my answer is yes, I have, and I really liked it. I might just go get some paint and brushes and try it again thanks to this question!

I tried it once, and realized he was going way too fast for me. Luckily, I had downloaded that episode, so I kept pausing it to do what he said to do. It took me a few hours as opposed to 30 minutes, but it came out okay. I’ve been meaning to try it out again sometime.

My mom paints and she watched him all the time. I’m old enough to remember him, but I’m not a painter. I remember my mom being very sad when he died. He did have a very calming voice. Thanks for stirring up old memories @ubersiren!

I never did, but my late, beloved mother-in-law did. I don’t think she used his method exclusively, but we have many of her original paintings hanging on the walls of our house.
