Best FPS game for PS3....?

I picked up a slim PS3 for my husband for Christmas. He loves FPS games, so I naturally got him Modern Warfare 2. What are some other FPS games that are awesome? He likes more “real” storylines, not science fiction. So nothing with aliens….

Here’s some of your big FPSs on the PS3:
Killzone 2
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 1 & 2
Bioshock
Fallout 3
The Orange Box
Unreal Tournament 3
Resistance 1 & 2

Hope that helps!

@joehobbes Some of those are quite sci-fi though.

Far cry 2 comes to mind.

You could also get him Call of Duty: World at War which is set in WWII.
It’s not as good as Modern Warfare though.

Unfortunately, most of the best FPS games tend to have a sci-fi setting.

Yeah, it’s hard to find a FPS that is not sci-fi or alternate universe. So Modern Warfare 1 & 2, Far Cry 2 have been mentioned, I would also consider SOCOM: Confrontation. Also Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six: Vegas are ‘real’ shooters, not sure if they are on PS3 though

Fallout 3. That game is awesome.

Resistance 1 & 2, Unreal Tournament 3, The Orange Box are quite Science fiction (all of them are about alien invasions). The others might be too, but I’m not familiar with them (that feels good to say for a change).

Uncharted 1 & 2 seem to be quite popular for the ps3 (here’s some gameplay). It’s more a mix of a platform game (crossing obstacles), some puzzles and bad guys (which you can shoot of course). The slower pace of the game combined with the added puzzles might make for a nice change (Modern Warfare is a great choice, but you don’t only want to give him games that are clones).

You definitely want to put some games in there as there is nothing worse than getting a cool present with no batteries (and the stores are closed). Just make sure he can return them if he doesn’t like them.

Btw, sounds like you’re living up to the expectations set by your username :p

If Sci-fi is sort of out of the question than some FPS that come to mind are,

-Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (If he likes Cowboys)
-Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (Though it would kind of be shadowed by his MW2)
-Far Cry 2 (Hope he enjoys jungles)
-F.E.A.R. and F.E.A.R. 2 (More Horror than Sci-fi)
-Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 1 & 2
-Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 1 & 2
-Battlefield: Bad Company (Probably your best bet in my opinion.)
-Army of Two (If he has a buddy to play with. AI is no fun.)

Uncharted is third-person, but a good game none the less. So I don’t know if you’d consider it.

markyy's avatar

@Haroot Wow, you’re right.. I didn’t really think about that. FPS of course means first person shooter, not third person shooter, but it’s nice to throw in the mix. Also great call on Modern Warfare 1 (provided he hasn’t played it yet and will play them in order).

Haroot's avatar

@markyy To be honest I never played it yet. So I didn’t know if there was an option to switch views. Didn’t mean to call you out on that one.

And one more to maybe consider:

-Mirror’s Edge

It’s “technically” a fps though you do more running than shooting.

I second Killzone 2. If you’re not getting a Xbox than Killzone is the next best. And since you already have MW2 you should be good.

You guys forgot the best of this year…

BORDERLANDS !

it’s the best FPS i’ve played in a while, not because of the story or anything, but because it’s just awesome.

Must have game: grand theft auto 4
I just like blowing stuff up and running like hell
keep honking I’m reloading.
Can’t go wrong supergirl
my other thought is you might consider buying him more games out of the slightly used bin. Saves money plays the same. Good luck

@Bugabear, @iwamoto and @srtlhill:

Great games indeed, but you all are kinda missing the first person shooter or non-scifi requirements she’s looking for here.

srtlhill's avatar

Yes you’re right. Try it you’ll like it, that’s what I’m suggesting.

Bugabear's avatar

Ah my bad. In that case Rainbow Six Vegas 2 would be the way to go.
