The name hawk is used informally to refer to several different families of birds of pray. Buteos, like Red-tailed Hawks, are impressive to look at, but are actually pretty wimpy hunters, and are more properly called buzzards, not hawks. Falcons are amazing and powerful hunters, but are also not technically hawks, though they are traditionally called hawks by falconers. The Accipiters have the best claim to the name hawk, and the most powerful among them is the Goshawk. It’s extremely strong and a formidable hunter and will take on much larger prey than most other raptors. Falconers who fly Goshawks have to wear extra-thick gauntlets to keep the hawk from driving its talons into the falconer’s hand.
