My 3-yr old macbook built-in keyboard is failing, and I believe it’s mechanical. The keyboard will occasionally hold down a key like ” over and over whether or not I have pressed that key. I have a USB keyboard to hook up, but, it is a little bit tricky to use a computer that has a mouse held down or a certain key at an awkward time. I’ve got finals coming up and papers, etc. and so I wondered, Is there a software solution that can turn off all input to my built-in keyboard? That would be really cool. Thanks!!

I’d take it into an Apple Store, if you have one nearby – applecare or not. they might be able to hook you up.

There is actually a software keyboard built in. If you’re on Snow Leopard go to System Prefs, Language & Text, Input Sources, check Keyboard & Character Viewer, go to the new item in the menu bar and click Show Keyboard Viewer.

I can’t remember how to do this in Leopard or Tiger, but its very similar, the pref panes just have different names.

What @eponymoushipster said is true and they are usually on the up and up about cost.
