Mounting a computer in backseat of car?

“Great Question” (1points)

I have a Sony Vaio (Model #:VGN-TX670P) laptop and I would like to mount it in the back seat of our Mazda 5 so the kids can watch videos and such. The laptop weights around 3.5 pounds, and is around 10.5 inches long, about 7 inches deep. I have seen a couple of options where you can mount the computer on the back of the head rest of the front seat, but the mazda 5 does not have much room between the front seat and back seats and when you add in the extra space needed for a car seat there would not be enough room.

Optimally I would like to mount it in the backseat between the driver and passenger seats centered so both kids could see it.
Do you have any suggestions?

Two potential issues with most solutions. It might imped your use of the rear view mirror if you placed it high enough for both kids to see and it might fly about the car injuring people if you got into a wreck even if its mounted. Something to think about. :)

Perhaps an easier solution would be a market-supplied DVD player meant to be mounted in an automobile.

I would follow pdworkin’s advice. I would hate to see the hardrive ruined because you hit a rough bump or hopped a curb.

I would also worry about any permanent mounting. My roommate left an iPod shuffle in her car and someone broke the window to steal it. I would just go with a few cheap mini DVD players that have a screen. I saw one at CostCo for 80 bucks the other day.

@Fred931 There isn’t a single one of those that are safe to begin with, but certainly not with kids in the car that could be hurt in the event of an accident.

DVD players aren’t all that expensive now and are far cheaper to replace than a computer, as well as designed to be securely mounted in a car.

thanks everyone for you comments. I am going to continue to look at headrest replacement options so that I will not have to worry about the safety issues.
