This could be a certain 3rd-party manipulation of MobileMe or maybe an application. Other than that, I don’t think there is a (non-jailbreak) way of getting into the OS and assorted guts of the device and sending automatic pictures. Of course, you asked about the iPhone, and I don’t see anywhere in that link where the woman had an iPhone. (I was going to keep talking about this, but then i realized iPhone was the first word of the title.) O-O

Any app that automatically uploads photos to a photo sharing website as they’re taken should suffice. For example Shutterfly‘s iPhone App (which is free).

There’s probably some for Flickr and Picasa too but I don’t know of any.

I also came across this: GadgetTrak, which seems a little more reliable for catching thieves (as long as the iPhone is on, of course).

@anon Makes an excellent point. Also, if you have MobileMe, you can do things like track its location, send return information like an address or phone number, create annoying beeps even on silent for two whole minutes, and even remotely wipe your phone.
