There was a lot of press in March of this year about the “aging in” of Facebook, with the largest growing demographic being women over 50. Because of the standardization of the page templates, ease of navigation, and the level of privacy control, Facebook became the social network site for intergenerational social connectivity, and crossed the divide from a fad to a bonafide communication platform. Because of the grounding as a closed college network site, the demographics of Facebook skews to college educated, slightly higher income users, whereas MySpace skews to a younger, less educated demographic.
The one area, though, that MySpace continues to dominate, despite FaceBook’s attempts at inroads into the market, is for music promotion. For all bands and musicians, MySpace is de rigueur for music promotion, replacing local talent and booking agencies. Having demos on MySpace is expected for bands and musicians.
