Yesterday I got an invitation from one of my classmate.Where not very close so she surprised. What should I buy for her birthday? She’s 15 and she’s a bit unusual(she doesn’t like normal stuff for a girl like make-up,clothes etc.).She’s more like the smart kind.and this makes my choice even difficult.Any ideas?

A book or a book voucher. Maybe there is something you do have in common – perhaps something you both chat about or something – there must be some reason she invited you. She sounds like a pretty interesting person to get to know – especially if you are surrounded by other 15 year olds who are only interested in make up and clothes!!!! Get her something she seems to like – maybe a nice journal or notebook and funky pens or beads or something. Have fun and feel glad she invited you.

A subscription to National Geographic or Smithsonian magazines.

Well, I usually turn to things that anybody would like when it comes to friends who I’m not very close with. Perhaps some lotion, a notebook, a poster, mitts… etc.
This might seem a bit rude, but usually I don’t tend to care as much about the gifts I get friends if I’m not very close to them. Maybe a gift basket full of chocolate or something? Also a card..

I like the idea of a gift card for a bookstore.

@Marina…....I think this is the best suggestion.

Especially if you don’t know her and she is clever/smart. Get her a gift card for Borders/Barnes and Noble/ or Amazon…even better get a gift card from an INDEPENDENT (non-chain) bookstore. They need the lurve (and the dosh.)

Here is a fun idea. Ask her what she would like.
It will give you a good idea of what she would like, and maybe you will grow a little closer.

Can you ask her mom? Maybe say that you were very happy to be invited to the party, and you want to get her a gift she would really like.

Attn: All gift question askers. Ask them or a friend! It’s an easy way to get some kind of idea.

Other than that, sounds like the gift card to a book store is a great idea. Does she have any hobbies? Painting, singing, dancing, skating, sports, hiking, knitting?

Get her a subscription to Mental Floss magazine. Buy the current copy at the bookstore and wrap it with a note that she’s getting a subscription. Seriously, I have about 4 years’ worth of back issues stacked up in the family room that my daughter won’t let me get rid of because her friends still like to read them when they come over. It’s perfect for the unusual, smart kind of teen.

Or a bookstore gift card.

I think a Moleskine notebook makes a wonderful gift.

@pdworkin, the Moleskine desktop template app is really cool!

Give it some thought. You may have gotten the invitation because she wants to get closer to you. If you could see yourself dating this girl make it more personal without going overboard. If you can’t, a gift card would work.

Do you think you might like her enough to go on a date with her? Do you think she’d go on one with you? If so then something like prepaid movie card/voucher (for two) along with one for an ice cream or candy place (the kind where they have all the different varieties and you fill your own bag).

Do they have any stores like Whole Foods or Henry’s near you? They have lots of interesting new chocolate bars that have all sorts of odd things in them like chile pepper, bacon, bergamot etc. in them. Get her a selection of 3 or 4 of those and use a piece of brown craft paper onto which you’ve painted a design for the gift wrap. Ask her friends or parents what colors she likes and use those to paint the gift wrap.
