I've been pondering getting a tattoo, do you think this is a poor way to express my thoughts?

“Great Question” (3points)

I have an infatuation with Maseratis, and want to get http://aerowingdynamics.com/aerocart/images/maserati_logo.jpg on the right side of my upper back. Being a male, would this look ridiculous?

Also – What are your thoughts on tattoos, and different kinds of body art in general?

That would make a great tattoo! Go for it. I don’t have a pic to show ya yet, but I have the Fender amp logo on my left arm, ala: http://www.guitarspares.com/contents/media/vintage_amp_logo.jpg

meh. tattoos on people are very hit and miss with me. some people look fantastic, others – blergh.

Yeah I think so, Take up art for a while…and when your good enough expressing yourrself on paper then you can apply that art to your body…until then I wouldn’t get a tattoo…its gona look stupid in about a months time

If you want it, then go ahead. No one should stop you from getting a tattoo you want.

Sarcasm's avatar

If you’re going to tattoo anything onto your body, don’t have it be a company logo. That’s worse than tramp stamps.

Whatever you get tattooed onto yourself, you’re going to look at it in 20 years and hate yourself.

I know you want to express your thoughts, but thoughts are often fleeting or change rapidly. I’m all for well-thought-out tattoos as an artistic expression, but as stated above, some of them are really hit and miss. I’ve seen some pretty bad ones, or ones that were clearly trying too hard.

I also have at least a few college girlfriends who regret the dolphin/starfish/celtic tattoo they got when they were ”so totally into dolphins” in the early 1990’s. You just can never project how your tastes will change.

I say sit with it for a few years and continue to look at other options until it’s so overwhelming that you know you want it on your body for the rest of your life.

btw: Laser removal of tattoos is really painful and doesn’t completely work in some cases. Don’t go into any decision just thinking you’ll get it removed if you don’t like it.

I think tats were at one time very expressive, meaningful, even transgressive. Alas, they have become commonplace in every mall, and have (for me, anyway) lost all meaning. Time to think of a better way to express yourself.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@Sarcasm still regretting that Zune tat, eh?

King_of_Sexytown's avatar

No. Not really. I have one and I like it fine. Should be about what you want and are comfortable with.

scotsbloke's avatar

It’s such a personal thing, a tattoo, have you spoke to your nearest and dearest? get feedback from people close to you, especially if you are married or have a partner – or both! :0)

@scotsbloke Or both!!! LAWL!!!

I say don’t do it. And if you do it, don’t get a company logo tattooed on.. you may come to regret that in 20–30 years.

Tattoos are so widespread these days that it is a lot less special than it used to be. Plus, so many people just get them to have one, so it cheapens the meaning and also seems like it increases the potential for stupid, poorly-done, ugly tattoos.

The ones that are beautiful are the ones that are really thought-out, artistic, and hold real meaning to the person who got it.

wow, we have a lot o’ ink haters up in here!

I don’t think getting a company logo permanently scarred on your body is a good idea. You might not even like those cars in ten years.

mclaugh's avatar

i don’t see why some people on here think tattoos have become less meaningful these days!? you’re putting everyone in the same bucket and that’s not right at all. my tattoos have the deepest meanings and are very close to my heart. i know some people just get tatts for the heck of it, but then again, that is nothing new.. it has always been like that and always will be. i think your putting a logo of a car on yourself is the same as someone who loves sailing getting an anchor done…if it makes you happy, go for it. don’t do it for anybody else…just think twice about it.

MissAnthrope's avatar

@mclaugh – I really do feel it cheapens the meaning. I’ll give you an example.. I got my tongue pierced when I was 19, in 1995 or 1996. At that time, piercing was a “fringe” activity and so, having one had a particular meaning. It indicated you were different, not mainstream, and you were willing to visibly display your differentness to the world. I liked that message.

Nowadays, everyone has piercings and it’s way more mainstream than it used to be. The message is entirely different. I’ve heard from some people they thought it was kind of slutty, or meant you were a slut, if you have a tongue piercing. And then I have to point out that I’ve had it forever and it holds a completely different meaning to me.

It’s really the same with tattoos. It meant one thing when it wasn’t mainstream and now, as I view it, means a lot less because so many people have them.

Tattoos are great! But remember permanent. You have to make sure you really want it. All of mine have a very personal meaning to me as I have had them done at points of transition in my life.

mclaugh's avatar

@MissAnthrope i really don’t think that it is “mainstream” as you put it…it is just more widely accepted. i don’t really know who is to judge what is meaningful enough to get tattooed. something that might be meaningful to your nieghbour might not be at all to you. that is what i like about tattoos…they are a part of who you are and they show some of it to the world.

mclaugh's avatar

i know that some tattoos, like the ones @MissAnthrope are just weird, not well planned and/or well inked and i agree that it is a misfortune but then there are some like mine! lol. i think you really have to choose your artist and do your research…

Company logos are generally a bad idea, Companies fail, change, adapt, and in 20 years a company may be drastically different than it is today. So consider if the company does change or you change will you stil be okay with having the tattoo. If you are, and have weighed the pros and cons, then go for it.

And I think tattoos are pretty damn mainstream. I probably know as many people with tattoos as with not

babyblue's avatar

I love tattoos personally, I have three myself, and I do think they are a way of expressing yourself. I would think twice about putting a logo on yourself though. Perhaps the car itself? If that’s the car you are absolutely in love with. Take your time and find exactly what you want. Don’t forget, it’s there for life.

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

I have only one, a tribal tattoo from my Army days on my right wrist, got it in Thailand. Pretty discreet.

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

A company logo? Nah. I wouldn’t. If you do choose to ink then shop around for someone who can do tight detail, someone along the calibre of Anil Gupta maybe.

aprilsimnel's avatar

I got my ink a long time ago. It’s not a corporate logo, and it’s deeply personally meaningful to me, yet is easily hidden.

However, if getting this means that much to you, no one here can tell you whether or not you can do it. But think about it carefully. It costs a lot to get one removed.

spontaneous_adjective's avatar

@aprilsimnel ; I would get it in a discrete place, like my upper back, near my shoulder blade.
