@gailcalled : We have cows (well, steers actually) right in our neighborhood. Fortunately the owner believes good fences make good neighbors and none of them are underground.
In our area we, too, have to watch for a variety of mobile impediments to safe driving, including cows, turkeys, squirrels, pocket gophers, jack rabbits, opossums, skunks, raccoons, herons, goats, donkeys, horses, jackasses (both human and animal), foxes, bobcats, coyotes, black vultures, caracaras, pot-bellied pigs, egg-laying turtles, the occasional mountain lion, jaguarundis, stranded marine mammals and egg-laying sea turtles (if you drive on the beach as many Texans do), pigeons, seagulls, drunken teenagers w/o seat belts, drunken pedestrians who always seem to wear black clothes, various pets, idiots on pocket bikes, and small children whose parents are perpetually sleeping something off with the front door open.
