I heard I can only ask three question every twelve hours on Fluther, is it true? If so why? I used to ask as many as I wanted on Answerbag.

Yeah its true. Either 12 or 24 hours.

It’s so Fluther doesn’t become bombarded by one type of question, and by limiting yourself to three every 12 hours, hopefully you pick the best three questions to ask. Quality over quantity.

“To encourage thoughtful questions”, so says the FAQ. In other words, to get people to ask good, well thought out questions, rather than just typing away asking as many questions as their fingers will allow, without any thought behind them. It’s a good policy, IMO.

I love answering questions that people have put some thought into. It makes for a good discussion. Questions like “What is your favorite day of the week? Or what are you having for dinner?” Really don’t do it for me.

Questions like the ones @jmah gave as examples are likely to be moderated (read: “removed”) regardless of the 3-question-per-day limit.

What makes a good question
“If your question is an attempt to connect with people (as opposed to an attempt to figure something out), like “Where is everyone from?” or “How old is everyone?” or “Are the Jonas Brothers lame?”, or it’s a yes-or-no, this-or-that question, it will probably be moderated — those questions are better suited for the chatroom.”

Put a lot of details into your question and please avoid simple polls such as @jmah showed examples. Think to yourself “Will those responding just be listing off items or will it inspire a real conversation?”

If you really have a problem with it, keep a list. Ask the ones you wrote down on days when you don’t think of as many.

It is true, but I don;t see how that is really an issue.

Then again, I only asked about 170 questions in six years at AB so maybe the reason I don’t see a problem is merely because it won’t inconvenience me.

I’m not much of an “asker” so it doesn’t bother me, but if you had seen some of the crap rolling down the screen at AB as @Talimze said you would understand the wisdom of this policy. This actually makes much more sense than the YA policy of limiting how many questions you can answer.

Sometimes I have seen it drop to two in 12 hours. I think it may vary a little (or it used to), depending on how many questions are being posted overall.

I don’t agree with every rule and policy I have seen on fluther. But I DO think this is an outstandingly excellent site, and I think that is due in large part to the rules and policies, which include the type of moderation we have. So it does not matter to me whether I agree with all the rules and policies or not. I am perfectly content with a system I couldn’t have come up with myself, because it does work, and I am sure it works better than whatever I would have designed.

@Jeruba Especially with the influx of new users from a site that had almost no structure in re: questions. Also don’t want to overload the physical capacities of the site.
