Ahhhh… the bed spins. You are experiencing the sensation of true vertigo. It is worse with your eyes closed because of nystagmus, which is a reflexive movement of the eye when the ear tells the brain that we’re spinning. When we open our eyes and fix our gaze on a stable object, the visual input will usually override the vestibular signal. However, because of intoxication, that system isn’t functioning efficiently, either.
As @Allie mentions, it is the same sensation that many people with inner ear disorders experience, without the fun of a night out drinking.
@Allie: So many have posted questions about vertigo and dizziness… have we discussed yours before? Have you gotten a diagnosis and any treatment?
