I need fresh produce and everything else. But don’t want Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s… is Safeway good? Or is Cala better? Is there another chain that I don’t know of?

For fresh produce, you can’t beat the farmer’s markets.

I always got the rest of my stuff at Trader Joe’s though, so I can’t help you there. I really think it’s cheaper (and higher quality) than Safeway/Lucky/etc.

Safeway is ok. If you’re near the Duboce triangle Safeway Golden Produce (across the street) is really good.

I live in San Francisco and Safeway is where I go for all my grocery shopping. :)

The meat market on Castro Street.

Stay away form Cala – as expensive as Whole Foods and terrible quality. Safeway works fine but nothing too out of the ordinary. I really like the Farmer’s Market on Sunday mornings (ends about 3pm) at Civic Center for fresh fruits and vegetables. And if you are looking for a true SF experience, Rainbow Grocery is quite an adventure…

@emma193 : thanks!!!

@emma193 : is the farmer’s market there during the winter months too?

The Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. I’m pretty sure it runs all year.

@Samantha_Rae It is indeed! Well worth a trip – it’s behind the Asian art museum and near the library. Always a colorful crowd and much cheaper than Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market.
