I just buy the stuff from the pet store. But I feed the ikkle boids all year round!

I have made my own in the past and like @scotsbloke I pretty much just buy them these days—although the cost savings from making your own is significant (about ⅓ the price). Here are a few sites with recipes: link and link and link

The third link above is for a recipe that actually attracted red bellied woodpeckers. While we have pilleated woodpeckers in my state, I have never seen any near my house and I have never tried to attract them.

I buy the chunks of suet & render it, then mix in sunflower chips. I pour it in the plastic containers I’ve saved from the commercial suet cakes. Sometimes mix in nuts, but usually don’t. I have had red-bellied woodpeckers come to it but they seem to prefer the higher one off my deck railing to the one on my feeder post in the yard. I have pileated woodpeckers here often but they have never come to the feeding station. They just go on the trees.

I do :)
1c crunchy peanut butter
1c lard
1c birdseed
½ c sugar
1 c cornmeal or flour
2 c oats-you can also add dried fruit to it if you want.Heat and mix in a pan ,then pack into molds.I use small plastic bowls,and make the cakes about an inch thick.Then freeze and use as needed.I put mine in a suet cage.I have been getting woodpeckers,nuthatches and chickadees so far :)

Get them in the store the birds seem to love them. Square suet and a bag of seed.

I just buy suet from a store. No pileated woodpeckers in the area, but it attracts downy woodpeckers and hairy woodpeckers.
