Would you like to share your favorite ball recipe?

My mom makes brandy balls every year for Christmas. It has been a family tradition for over 20 years now.

Recipe:
3 cups ground vanilla wafer (1½ box)
*
1 cup ground nut meats (walnut, pecan, etc.)
*
2 cups powdered sugar
*
3 Tbsps corn syrup
*
1½ Tbsp cocoa
*
½ cup whiskey, rum or brandy

Instructions
Mix well. Mold into balls using a melon baller. Dust with powdered sugar and store in an airtight container.

Interesting. We have never made balls for Christmas. A variety of cookies, several different pies, and sauerkraut, but no balls.

My Mom made “onigiri”, or Japanese rice balls, when we were kids. They are easy to make and fill an empty stomach well. Here’s one traditional recipe——

1½ c. dried apricots, finely chopped
2 c. coconut flakes
⅔ c. sweetened condensed milk
½ c. powdered sugar

Mix the apricot, coconut sweetened condensed milk together, and shape into small balls. Roll in powdered sugar to coat. The mixture is sticky, and requires handling lightly Place in an air-tight container and refrigerate for a week to blend flavors. When ready to serve, roll again in powdered sugar to finish.

One version of “DIRTY SNOW BALLS”

1 package of Oreo cookies

1 package of cream cheese
*
1 package of whit almond bark

Mix up Oreos and cream cheese in a food processor until dough like then roll into about one inch balls, place on cookie sheet and drizzle with white almond bark.

I won this recipe in a 3rd grade spelling bee. It’s ridiculously simple and all my family and friends ask me to make them every year.

2 c. peanut butter
½ c.honey
1⅓ c non-fat dry milk
cereal, nuts, coconut etc. for topping

Mix peanut butter and honey. Gradually add the dry milk until thoroughly mixed. The stand mixer is best for this- it’s a super thick and dense dough. Roll into 1” balls. Roll each ball in topping of choice. I like to use honey flavored corn flakes or rice krispies for a little crunch but you can use whatever you want. Tip: I have been adding a little more honey to enhance the flavor, then a tad more dry milk.

Does it have to be candy balls, or can it be fish balls?

I’ve seen a similar version of @Mandomike‘s recipe, only using chocolate chips instead of the almond bark. (Alternately, you could melt the chips and dip the balls in the chocolate.) This version was called “Dirtballs.” :-)

1 Can of Sockeye Salmon.spend the money on the higher end salmon. I went cheap for the first time yesterday and….it just didn’t work nearly as well. It had a sort of watery, too-creamy texture. Tastes ok but….trust me!
1 8oz thinger of cream cheese.
1 bunch of green onions
1 TBLS smoke sauce
1 TBLS lemon juice.
♣Chop up the onions, de-bone the salmon, rub off the icky skin parts.
♣Mix everything together, mashing, mashing, mashing with a fork.
♣At this point you’re supposed to take a small bag of crushed walnuts, crush them even further, almost to a powder with a hammer, and using crushed walnuts to kind of coat your hands to keep the dip from sticking to your hands, proceed to work the dip into a ball, adding walnut covering as you go.
♣ If you really like the walnuts, create two Salmon balls, or even three Salmon balls, because on the one big Salmon’s ball, you run out of the walnut flavor really quickly because it’s only on the outside.
♥This stuff is TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good!!!

Honestly…I leave the walnuts and the ball part out of it any more, unless I’m doing some formal function, and just leave it in the bowl I mixed it in. I just wanted a chance to talk about Salmon balls, is all, with out getting modded! :)
